When is rough green again early in year

I'm from Michigan and took a late January Vegas golf trip last year and payed big bucks.  The golf was fun but was turned off by the rough being yellow from being winter dormant or something.  I want to take son on golf trip in AZ and was wondering when rough is green again.  I just want perfect conditions for that kind of money 💲

For most places, summer when the Bermuda comes back. True rough is tough to find in Arizona.

Overseeded fairways and greens with dormant bermuda after the first cut is considered perfect for this time of year and will be common in the Valley.  Also, rough as you know it in the Midwest is not as common much of any time in AZ.  Come April/May you start seeing some bermuda overtake the rye with bermuda taking over for the summer.  If your son has never played overseeded and dormant bermuda, he may enjoy it.

 

Mid-September to overseed, is a sneaky good time as the bermuda can be thick depending on what the course wants.  The temperatures have dropped a bit as well.  I certainly understand the cost of rounds this time of year, but the 75 degree weather compared to the teens and 20s in the Midwest might be enticing.

I’m from Washington and have zero complaints about the dormant rough. Especially considering it’s 75, the fairways and greens are generally dry, firm and fast. Quite a leap from the 35 degree and mudbogs this time of year in Washington.

Summer huh. So 115 degrees or so? Doesn’t sound perfect. 😄

The only public courses I can think of off the top of my head that usually overseed a lot of the rough in winter and don't cost a fortune are probably the Wigwam courses, particularly Gold and Blue.

Arizona Biltmore Adobe perhaps? Links at Queens Creek has thick, green rough at this time, but it's definitely not a course I'd recommend.

Yes, I believe Biltmore does wall-to-wall overseeding of the whole place. Now that I am thinking about it some more, Lookout Mountain does too.

 

There are some other courses that overseed everything on the one hole that runs along a major public road, to lure you in before you realize the other 17 holes look like total crap (Great Eagle, etc.) but I would not count those for this discussion. 🤣

Lol. I played a round last year at Great Eagle. I was paired with a local who has has an RV there for years. He said that for a few years the greens were sand/dirt. Seems they've come a long way.

This is the key to playing golf on the winter vacation.  If you are looking for course conditions similar to a summer in Michigan, then you should probably stay home and take up cross country skiing.

If you are from Michigan and haven't played out of thick active growing bermuda you aren't missing out. Compared to cool season rough it is so much stickier and unpredictable and can turn a round into a slog quickly. Much more enjoyable to play perfect rye fairways and dormant bermuda rough in my opinion. Bent greens will also typically be best in any season besides summer.

Just one more contributor to the overwatering soggy conditions. Arizona is a desert. But here's some courses you should strongly consider: Arizona Grand, Western Skies, Coyote Lakes.
