MGA Question 15

Recommended Posts

15. On a short Par 3 in a match, Player B hits first when Player A has the honour. Player B’s shot lands in a deep bunker 10 yards from the hole. Player A does not cancel and recall the stroke. Player A’s tee shot is hit into the woods where it may be lost. Wishing to hit a provisional, A advises B, “I’m going to hit another, just in case” and hits a provisional one foot from the hole. A requests B not to look for the original ball but B insists and starts to walk into the woods. Player A rushes to the green and taps in the provisional. Before the three minute search has elapsed B indicates that A’s original ball has been found. B insists A’s holed provisional does not count since A played out of order by holing the putt. A correctly identifies the original ball, hits it on the green and two putts. Player B plays a bunker shot onto the green and three putts.

The result of the hole is:

A. A wins the hole

B. B wins the hole

C. The hole is halved

D. A is disqualified

I'll bite. In match play, order of play is crucial. I can't imagine that whatever the result of the stroke played out of order matters. B wins the hole. (R6.5 isn't controlling, since A's out-of-order stroke isn't applicable if B doesn't wish it to be so.)

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

It sounds like B didn't require A to replay the holed putt, therefore A's score for the hole should be 4 leading to winning the hole. But because you can disregard rules in match play, A played a wrong ball when he/she made the second stroke at the original ball and lost the hole at that point... But as the players seem oblivious to the rules, A scored 4 with the original and won the hole against B's 5.

There isn't much clarity in the reference "B insists A's holed provisional ball does not count since A played out of order". Is that supposed to be telling us that B has cancelled A's stroke for playing out of turn?  It would be a simple matter for a referee on the scene to clarify this, but the MGA are not making themselves available.

When A rushed up and tapped in before the original ball was found, 18.3c(2) was triggered, the provisional became the ball in play.  Assuming the ditzy question wording means B cancelled that stroke, what must A do next? 6.4a(2), second bullet, indicates the player must play a ball from where the cancelled stroke was made - suggesting it remained ball in play but just needed to be replayed. Consequently, when A went and played the original ball, he played a wrong ball for automatic loss of hole. Answer D.

But if B did not properly cancel A's stroke, then A finished the hole with 4 and the subsequent action with the original ball was irrelevant, A's 4 bettered B's 5, answer A.

The question here is did B cancel the prov ball tap-in stroke (for out-of-turn)? And is it the BiP even if canceled?

A variation of this was asked in my USGA class - so someone had been reading this! Pretty sure they decided the prov did become BiP.

However, A played out the original meaning he "accepted " B's claim - agreement of the 2 players...so he made 5.

I received a very good comment on this case.

In the text player B does not actually require A's stroke to be cancelled so A has finished the hole as soon as he holed his provisional ball and playing a wrong ball does not change that. It does, though, mean that A lost the following hole, if I understand R5.5 correctly.

Mere saying 'you played in a wrong order' does not mean quite the same as requiring to cancel and replay the stroke. Had B actually required A to replay his stroke A would never have gone to play his original ball.

Thoughts?

"B insists A's holed provisional does not count since A played out of order". Is this supposed to be saying B recalled A's stroke? If it is, for what possible reason would the question not say precisely that?

For the referee on the ground - ask the question that the MGA failed to provide clear information on - if stroke was  cancelled, then B wins hole when A plays a wrong ball (my earlier reference to DQ was an error, it is general penalty). If it was not cancelled then A wins the hole.

So as with many MQA questions, the correct answer depends on information that the mangled questions do not provide.

There is an excellent rules point highlighted in this question - what is the status of the original ball and that PB tapped in if the stroke is cancelled by the opponent. Answer is original ball is no longer in play and player must continue with PB - explanation is in last para of 18.3c(2)/3. But that excellent rules fine detail is obscured by other mangled language.
