MGA Question 14

Newby

Recommended Posts

14. In a stroke play Foursomes event, side A-B has declared that Player A will tee off on the odd numbered holes and Player B will tee off on the even numbered holes. On the 1st hole, Player A tees off and then Player B tees off, mistakenly believing the format to be Four-Ball. They lift Player A’s ball and continue, with Player A hitting Player B’s ball to an area that may be out of bounds. Player A announces and plays a provisional ball. The original ball is found in bounds, directly behind a large penalty area that would require a long carry. Because Player B believes the next stroke cannot carry the penalty area, B uses a putter and taps the ball 6” inches forward, leaving the carry shot up to Player A. Player A hits the next shot onto the putting green, and from there Player B putts the ball into the hole.

The result of the hole is that side A-B

A. Scores 7

B. Scores 9

C. Scores 11

D. Is disqualified

Just like the other question, this is premised upon a player being "mistaken" or not following established rules (like playing out of turn in the previous example).

In both cases, I think all players should be DQed and should not be allowed to play competitive golf again.

Just one man's opinion.

B's tee shot is the ball in play and they're lying 3. Since A's ball is not in play, there's no penalty for picking it up. A makes a stroke at B's ball, now lying 4. They had a valid reason to play a provisional but it should've been played by B. There's no penalty though because the original ball was found on the course. Assuming B's tap at the ball was a legitimate stroke at the ball, there was no issues with it and they're now lying 5 (an intentional whiff would be a different story because it isn't a stroke at the ball). Two more strokes without any issues and we end up with a score of 7.

I was thinking (with my "9") that the team got hit with the general penalty for Player B "practicing on the course", the 2nd tee ball.

Then I thought 2 shots for playing from a wrong place since they played B's ball instead of A's.

So the 5 they made plus 4 = 9.

Then I looked up the following,,,,,,,,,,,,

22.3 Side Must Alternate in Making Strokes

On each hole, the partners must make each stroke for the side in alternating order:

Any penalty strokes for the side do not affect the partners’ alternating order of play.

Penalty for Making a Stroke in the Wrong Order in Breach of Rule 22.3: General Penalty.

In stroke play, the side must correct the mistake:

  • The right partner must make a stroke from where the side made the first stroke in the wrong order.

  • The stroke made in the wrong order and any more strokes before the mistake is corrected (including strokes made and any penalty strokes solely from playing that ball) do not count.

  • If the side does not correct the mistake before making a stroke to begin another hole or, for the last hole of the round, before returning its scorecard, the side is disqualified.

Since A played first HIS ball counted and B's is irrelevant.

Since A played B's tee ball they didn't properly alternate shots since B's ball was irrelevant. Not having corrected their mistake they are DQ'd.

Read Interpretation 22.3/2 - Determining which ball is in play when both partners in foursomes tee off from same tee.
