DMD to be allowed at the PGA Championship

Recommended Posts

It's about time.  I love tradition, but Pandora's box has been opened for quite some time.  If players can't use DMD's, then the rules are already bifurcated.  Caddies aren't going to lose their jobs, they use these things in practice rounds and make notes, I am not sure what the tour is so worried about.

I mean we can use WMD's, have you seen the size of those drivers?

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.
Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal. 5-G
Vokey 54.10, 2009 58.12 M, Testing TM MG2 60* TW grind and MG3 56* TW grind.  Or Ping Glide Stealth, 54,58 SS.

Pace of play isn't of interest to those in the business of TV golf. Oh, they pay lip service to pace of play, but it'll be a cold day when they do anything about it.

And, just wait until players like DeChambeau start lasering their putts.

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

Depending on pulse width there is a minimum range limit.  Shorter than that and you won't get a good measurement.

It’s about time. Now to eliminate green books. Get the pro game closer to how we ams play.

Dream on (but it's a good dream).

My even bigger dream is ban advice from anyone other than partner in team play. Caddies to be work horse only, game is supposed to be a game of personal skill, not a game of who gets the best advice.

Caddies should only be able to give advice between the green and the next tee.

Y'all may want to read the thread in tour talk.  Guys on tours who have tried this admit that they still confirm against the yardage book.  It is not going to speed up play.

I'm agnostic on them using them, but those thinking it will speed up play, I think will be sorely disappointed.

I think it will take a while, but eventually everyone will get comfortable with it.  I'm sure the guys just out of college will be more comfortable with it.

Pace of play won’t be helped. They all have yardage books to 1 yard accuracy that they pay a service for.  Plus their caddies before hand course scouting notes.

it was told in another thread by a player from that tour ( McKenzie I believe ) where this has been tried , that their rounds increased on average 1 minute in length with DMDs.  So literally no difference.

I don’t see the need.  It’s redundancy in my opinion , and the over achievers will now have yet another point of data to balance against the book , their eyes and the course markers.

For me, there's not a single reason there to regulate against them and I'm one that believes you really do need a valid reason to regulate against something. I also don't see the short-term behavioural response as particularly relevant. I can put my hand on my heart and say it absolutely makes a huge difference when I play tournament stroke play on an unfamiliar course - virtually no more stepping things out and making poorly informed calls and considerably greater efficiency in the shot prep process.

Sure. But I’ve  yet to hear a valid “ why “ to do it either.  What’s next ? Carts ?

I play tournaments blind at times too.  But I don’t have a caddie with a gps built yardage book.   Watch and see them shoot , the  consult book , then step.  Then say “ huh.  147 laser 148 book ..... what’s the wind doing “?

A statement from the PGA Tour:

“The PGA Tour conducted a four-tournament test of Distance Measuring Devices on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2017, with varying results,” the Tour said in a statement released Tuesday. “We decided at the time to continue to prohibit their use in official competitions on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and Korn Ferry Tour for the foreseeable future. We will evaluate the impact rangefinders have on the competition at the PGA of America's championships in 2021 and will then review the matter with our player directors and the Player Advisory Council.”

They will still be going to the 'book' for a long time before shots. The book does have elevation changes and plenty of other information the laser will not provide. The laser is only useful on the PGA Tour when they hit a wild shot leaving their next one in spot that was not scouted.

This will make measurable change to pace IMO.
