Golf pride tour velvet full cord grips, im confused

Recommended Posts

So bought some golf pride tour velvet full cord grips online but from a pro shop, they feel smooth and the cord isnt that noticable to touch, ive questioned this and being told this is normal and the cord will come out over time.

Ive never heard of this before, i got some custom made ping wedges with the bct full cord grips and the cord is a lot more noticeable to touch, am i missing something? The pro is adamant this is correct.

Maybe he has sent me an older version and this is how they use to be?

When the tour velvet full cord gets well used does the cord come out more and look tatty or do they get smooth?

The process for "exposing" the chord during manufacturing leads to inconsistencies from one grip to the other.  If you had 50 grips to choose from you would see some have more chord than others.  It's

That’s how they have always been. Go Lampkin Crossline if you want a proper corded grip.

More of a fan of the Lamkin Crossline Cords or Z-Cords if you need to tear your hands up!

Not necessarily more cord, its just the texture is a lot more noticeable to touch than the ones i just bought, the ones ive bought are almost smooth

This is accurate. Seems the TV Cord is more prone to this than Z Cord. I was never a TV Cord fan, and it’s one of my gripes with the MCC.

I didn't think BCT Full cord was still made.  It is different from TV full cord.

Interesting. Smooth grips to me usually indicated they were getting pretty much worn out. I used to play tour velvet cords, and when they became to smooth I just scraped them up w/a scotch brite pad to bring the cord back up. Seemed to work fine, but I don't remember them getting overly smooth to the touch, just more regular tour velvet like. Roughing up a stock tour velvet w/scotch brite also works to s point, but when they become to smooth or non tacky its time to regrip.

I thought that when cord grips get more used the cord comes out more and you get that tatty look, is that not the case with the tour velvet cords?

If they feel smooth already, you like have bought old stock.  I'm betting they will get slick in no time.  I would return them if you can.

I remember seeing a video clip long ago on how Golf Pride makes their grips and saw that they expose the cord from the grip BY HAND.  Some guy simply puts the grip against a sand belt to grind off the rubber to expose the cord.  I don't know if they still do it by hand.

BCT cords feel much smoother when they aren’t on clubs. Once installed they are much.. grippier? I think it’s because it stretches outwards and exposes the cord more. Don’t stress. Just had a new set installed and they feel much different off the club to on.

Thing is, that if they are BCT cords, they are several years old before he bought them.  Going to be dry.

I'll second the inconsistent nature of Tour Velvet Cords. I don't know if it is just small sample size, but I seem to have much better luck with maximum cordiness with the 58R versions of the normal 60R. 60R's seem to be all over the map at times whereas the the 58R has always been consistent when i've ordered them.

Any chance of some pictures OP? What I would say is that if you have had experience of Golf Pride Tour Velvet cords before the introduction of BCT and now have them with the BCT, you will notice a difference in feel.

Bingo! i have some BCT cords already on my wedges and they feel a lot more "cordy" than the standard tour velvet cords i have just got, a lot more, but i haven't put them on yet, going to fit one this weekend, i actually didn't realise there was a difference between tour velvet cords and BCT tour velvet cords

Yeah, a few years ago now, the BCT became an option.

The difference is really quite noticeable. I always felt that if I hadn’t been playing much, the first time I picked up a Tour Velvet Cord my hands were ripped to bits. With the BCT, it’s not such an instant feeling of harshness but as they grip wore on it felt more cordy so to speak.

Twist the grips like you're wringing out a towel, I've seen Patrick Boyd from National Custom/BB&F mention it a few times and it helps make the cord come out.

Interesting - they used to call it BCT on their website.  I did a search on GP site for BCT and 6 grips with brushed cotton came up, including above.  Now they are spelling it out.

So many tour players still use the bct cords. Very popular out on tour. I have a pile of the white cords kicking around here, along with the stenson tour wrap cord. I Have 120 of those they are by far my favorite.
