Easier launching fairway woods

Recommended Posts

Trying to off load a 3w I can’t hit and looking for easier to launch options. I am a high spin golfer but I think that got me into trouble with my current FW. I have been told to go with some higher loft/spin options and then loft them down. Any recommendations? Ultimately I’ll likely go get fit and actually test these on grass to make sure I am making a sound decision, unlike this one where I didn’t test any woods and fitter just told me to get something low spin after watching me hit my aero burners.

I put a ping G400 5 wood in my bag a little over a year ago. I had broke the shaft in  my Cobra 4 wood. I hit the 4 Wood better and further than any 3 wood I have ever hit. I hit the 5 wood just as long and can get it up in the air better. I would not hesitate to put a higher lofted fairway in play.

Take your time and find a fairway club you like and one you strike solid, no matter what it is, 3, 4, or 5 wood. Fairway woods are pretty demanding clubs, so a little time and practice pay big dividends. There are lots of choices, and design features that can enhance your fairway ball striking.

I’ve had a couple that have really helped me and several that I couldn’t hit well if you paid me.

What has worked the best for me is a 16.5 degree “4 wood” with a 42” shaft.  I realize I’m giving up some distance with the shaft cut down, but I swing down with a fairway (like a 5 iron) anyway.  Doing it like this, I can get plenty of launch off the deck and it carries around 215 for me.

I’m currently playing a 16.5 TS2 but I also have a 16.5 917F2 that’s pretty much the same club.  A while back I also had a Callaway Rogue 4 wood that worked great too.  IMHO, the TS2 is stupid easy to launch.

I’m the same way, had a Ping g410 3wood and then bought the 5 wood . Hit it as far and higher than my 3 wood . I needed up selling my 3wood

I'm hitting the G 425 and it launches very easily. I would go G 410/425 on this.

Thank you both. I am leaning super hybrid but maybe considering a G410 5w lofted down.

Well there you go lol.. your playing the sub zero. Get yourself a standard.... sometimes playing the numbers game with launch monitors is bs in my opinion. Nothing says it works like just hitting it out in the real world and saying if it worked. Tiger, jack and all the other greats before the launch monitors seemed to do just fine without it. Ive heard tiger say recently he doesnt may too much attention to them either.

TE Exotics 220 EXS.  I had to settle for the cheap Ventus to get the 16.5 head I wanted, but might actually be better for me.  Super easy to launch of the deck.

Maybe it's all in my head, but for whatever reason, I always find a 4W easier to hit off the deck than a 3W.  Much more so than the additional 1.5-2.0* of loft should account for.

One of my playing partners has an Mavrik 4W and loves it...

I had some similar issues with the Epic Flash. I switched to the Mavrik and I can elevate those with ease. What Callaway did with the Mavrik was move the leading edge a bit forward (onset?) in relation to the hosel compared to the EF. It helps the clubhead engage the ball at a lower point which helps launch.

Sim Max are insanely easy to launch off the deck. 3W and 5W in my bag are like cheating. So easy to hit. V sole really helps with turf interaction in my opinion.

When I first started playing 917s in my bag, I had both the 16.5 and 21 deg fairways.  Eventually, I swapped the 7 wood for a 21 deg 818H1 because I found it gave me a bit more versatility for non fairway lies.  In my current bag, I’m playing the 16.5 fairway and the 21 hybrid but both are now TS2s.  Those 2 are such a great pairing.

+1 on TEE Exotics, I have the XCG5 for so many years and it is the club I trust the most in my bag for any kind of shot. This week I got a EXS that I’ll try this weekend.

Thanks all. Went super hybrid due to shorter shaft and being upright for me. If it doesn’t workout I now have plenty of great options to try!

I'm intrigued by the TSi1 -- a new fairway wood coming from Titleist. It's a lighter and flatter/shallower design, which is a total departure for Titleist. I probably wouldn't consider it as a 3W but as a higher launching fairway wood (5W, 7W ... and they make a 9W) it might be worth looking at.

So have had the super hybrid for a couple months and from the tee I love it. Easily 230-240 when i dont have user error. From the deck i am still working on and may experiment with the shaft choice so see if i can get both ways to work.
