XR Driver

So what’s exactly so bad about using an OEM driver before 10?

Nothing...Zero...Zilch...Nada.

In fact...the XR16 head is only a couple of grams (insignificant) difference than a US Kids head.

All of this anecdotal stuff about an EPIC Star being "better" than an XR or XR16 (or any other OEM)...for an 8 YO...is pure garbage.

The key when they are that small is head weight and overall weight.

With that said...take a look in the bags of the "big hitters" in the 8-10 YO age groups...and you'll likely see an OEM head.

@Bizzle80  My son started playing XR16 at 8 years old.  It was night and day better than USKG driver....if you have the means, time, and curiousity...go for it.    Each kid is different, so maybe it will work for your son, maybe not.  It did for mine though.

We tried two versions of the flynn shaft before trying a recoil F1.  The Recoil F1 /  XR16 Head was good....noticeably better than with the flynn shaft and I am pretty sure I found it on ebay already with Callaway adapter for $39.    My son is now 10, still plays recoil shaft (F2), but in a Cobra F9 10.5*.  The XR16 was 13.5*, so just got to a point it was spinning too much.  Otherwise , was fantastic - lightweight head, hot, forgiving, and a slight draw bias....good setup for under 10.

For the cost of a used ebay shaft, sounds like a fun and worthwhile project.  If it doesnt work, you could probably easily sell the finished combo and recoup the $40 you have it.

thanks, good idea re eBay/recoil shafts. Sorry, maybe dumb question, but since I have to cut down shaft for her anyways, I can get a ladies hybrid shaft and go from there yes?

For the driver you mean?  I don’t know, but I don’t think that will work.   Typically the hybrid designated shafts are heavier...I would check the the weight, but may want to stick with the driver shaft .  For the recoil , the specific shaft is 440ES (F1 is “ladies”, F2 is “senior”.  Weight is somewhere between 45g uncut.

I wouldn't do this because a Hybrid Recoil shaft will likely be tipped to account for the extra weight of the hybrid head.  It might turn into a shaft that's way too tip stiff for her swing speed.  I've owned several Recoil F1s in different heads...and the tip to 1st graphics measurement is much less for the hybrid F1...meaning it's been tipped.  Once Snowmageddon passes I'll try to take some pics to show you the difference.

(plus...for her playing par 4's at 150yds and hitting to pw range really helps, so we will take the distance. 5-10 extra yds for an 8yo is huge

My daughter is almost 8 yo and plays US Kids UL clubs. There are a few girls around her age (a few months older or a few months younger). For all of them, 150-yard is just a driver + PW/SW. We all use US Kids UL clubs.

I talked with their parents. It seems they all went through some rapid growth spurt recently. I used to be very concerned about my daughter not hitting far enough for 150-yd par 4s, then this growth spurt simply took care things.

Min and max clubs is fun especially if you have the means to do so. On the other hand, sometimes, you just need to let nature do its thing.

Ok. Settling this discussion. And maybe just settled for us. Put the Xr head on her Flynn shaft at 12.5’ and she loved it. Felt lighter in her hands than the fmax ladies head and she was swinging noticeably faster and keeping the drives on a rope. That xr looks really forgiving...

I dont know actual weights, but for her the swing weight in hand felt “light” (her words) and allowed her to swing fast and in control. It’s in the bag and I don’t think she is going to take it out.
