Saving Search with Notifications

Is it possible to create a saved search with notifications?  So when something with that search filter is posted, you get an email notification?

 

This would be helpful for BST content...

Don't think so but what you CAN do is bookmark your search.

 

So do a normal search for the item(s) you're looking for including the forum (Topic).

 

e.g. "Callaway Super Hybrid". Then click on "Topics" and select "Classifieds". If that's not narrow enough (it'll give you every post for Callaway OR Super OR Hybrid), click on "Callaway AND Super AND Hybrid below your search bar. Then try that and see if that produces the results you want..

 

Once you've narrowed it to what you consider acceptable results, click on the Bookmark icon in your browser's bar (usually to the right of the URL). Then rename it (or not) and select where you want the bookmark to be placed.

 

If you expect to search fairly often, place it in your "Bookmarks" Toolbar". Then it should show up right below the URL line in your browser. 1-click and you've got your results. Or you can place in in "Other Bookmarks" (2 clicks),,,,,,,,,,, or anywhere else you like.

 

Click on the bookmark to search whenever you like. 👍

Note - the board default for sequencing the results is "Relevancy". How exactly the software defines relevancy is anybody's guess. And why the default was never changed only you-know-who knows,,,,,,,,,,, 

 

Most(?) useful is by "Date'.

 

It appears, if you click on "Sort by" and click on "Date" before you save your bookmark, it WILL carry through when you click on the bookmark.

Is this still the case we can't save searches with notifications?

 

My use case is pretty simple and straightforward, I think:

 

I want to get an email when there is a new classified post with a certain search term in the title or body.

 

I can subscribe to a daily digest for the classifieds, or get an email when ANY topic is posted to the classifieds. I also can search the classifieds for a search term. Figure I should be able to make a custom stream based on search topic and subscribe to it....

 

Bookmark is interesting way to get it in the browser history....but then I still have to check the site. Would like the notification pushed to me.

You almost seem to be inferring that previously there was a way of getting what you seem to be looking for. True ?

 

AFAIK there's never been a function for what you're asking.

 

Searches need to be triggered by you. You can't expect the board software to run your search "continuously" and notify you when you get new results.

 

Streams work the same way. They are just another search only you set the parameters - but you still have to trigger them.

Dunno if there was ever a way previously. Perhaps not. I don’t know how the software works behind the scenes. Just was hoping to set up a rule that would only put something new in my bell list or send me an email if it met a search word filter.

That's correct. Custom streams actually ARE searches but cannot search for specific words (only tags) and cannot push notifications afaik.

I did come up with one "work around" a while back.

 

First, I subscribed to the whole Classified / BST forum so I'd get an email for each post. Then, in my email client, I set up a rule to look at the incoming message for a keyword in title or body and forward to another email address (one which I do regularly check).

 

This worked for a while but has been fragile. The site would send dozens of emails each day for all the BST traffic to an old Hotmail address that I don't typically check. After a couple days this flood of emails would stop arriving. Something up on the Hotmail side (other posts on that). Then after I'd poke here and Gxgolfer would look into it, they would start up again and work for a few days and then stop again. Not just for me but bunch of other people having issues with Hotmail.

 

I intended to make a dummy Gmail account and try to avoid Hotmail, just never got around to it. Maybe I will dust off those plans.
