3 irons are so 1990's, LOL.  I will say I discovered even as a relatively long but lowish ball hitter that below 21 degrees of loft, my ball flight with this club won't hold a green unless it is very

My set 3 iron is lofted at 20*, which is the strongest loft I can get away with for playability off the deck. Secondly, the precision is very important to me. I hit it to a certain yardage and gaps well off my 4 iron. Last thing I want is an extra 15 yard jumper from a UDI on a par 3.

I permanently swapped my 17* 2 set iron for the Ping G410 Crossover 17*.  More ball speed , forgiveness and playability is a no brainer. I’m not concerned of the odd nuked ball in this case since my goal is to chase the ball down there.

I have a selection of 21 degree Cally UT's i can choose from if occasion requires, some i have at generic 3 iron length some at driving iron length.

Have pondered finding a set Apex Pro 3i in either '16 or' 19 variant, however I have always come back to thinking if I need a 3i i should swing a UT or hybrid to give me the distance.

I have a 3 in my Vapor set and hope to find a VR Pro 3i but could see a utility iron if the loft is correct.

<edit> I have a 3h that I got before my 3i and love the distance. Not sure if I am keeping it in the bag or not yet.

I currently game a 21* 3 iron in my current Z745 set with Steelfiber i95S shafts. After hearing all the hype on the hybrid irons, I got a hold of a 20* U45 with Nippon shaft. Hated the club, figured it was the shaft. Swapped it for a SF95S, but still prefer my set 3 iron. It’s a great club, but provides me no real benefit over my set 3 iron.

It can launch the ball a little higher and softer, so I may play it on longer courses if there is little wind, but for me it is not appreciably longer or more forgiving. I also share the same concern as chuck905 concerning hot jumpers with a hollow club.

My last 2 sets of irons didn’t come with a 3-iron, so had to find other options. For the last set I tracked down a 3-iron that matched the set, but had a different shaft and I got inconsistent results from it (TM Tour Preferred ‘14).

This time around with my set of TM P770’s I’m trying Srixon Z U85 Driving Iron (3-iron, 20*). I believe it will be easier to hit consistently, will get better distance, and be easier to hit off the deck and rough.

I went with a JPX 921 Forged 4 iron this year and had it bent a degree strong to 20* so it’s more of a 3 iron. 4 iron is 23* down to 47* PW. I hit it about 15-20 yards further than my 4 iron. I don’t get along with the clunky hollow driving hybrid iron that can hit flyers once in a while and I hook hybrids like crazy.

I can hit low stingers with the 921 Forged and it’s more of a top bag gap iron between my 4 iron and 3 wood. It has a nice forged feel too. It’s good on short par 4’s and for long par 3’s.

I have a driving/utility 3 iron in there. It’s really a club that I get most out of when using it from the tee which is why I have that kind of 3 iron as opposed to a set 3 iron. I kinda view my 3 iron as a speciality club in much the same way I do with my LW.

I've been currently testing an equivalent 3 DI to replace my 4 iron.  Something that sits between my 2 hybrid and 5 iron.  What I can say is that the DI is a lot easier to hit than the 4 iron.  Mishits also tend to be more forgiving IMO.  I can hit it high and low.  It also flies a bit further as well although that could be more of a loft difference.  Only drawback is that it's harder to work the ball left to right and vice versa, but I would imagine that's because of the higher MOI?

3 irons are so 1990's, LOL.  I will say I discovered even as a relatively long but lowish ball hitter that below 21 degrees of loft, my ball flight with this club won't hold a green unless it is very soft.  I figured this out late in my college career and added a 5 wood.

I will say that with club design changes and some actual insight on distances gained through trackman and the like I changed my gapping to get good coverage as well.  Gone are the days of 4* gaps at the bottom to 3* gaps at the top.

I typically play a 20* ish SGI/DI type of iron.  Typically my my next club is four degrees to 24, then to 28, then to 32, 36, 41,46,50,55,60.   Now I say typically, because I bend to get my gaps and certain head styles can lead to different lofts to get my gaps correct. My lengths are also screwy with 1/4 increments off of a relatively stock 7 iron length, so I've got that going for me which is nice.

This is a pretty good comparison. Really just depends how you intend to use it, there are so many different utility irons out there that perform differently from each other.

Thanks I definitely think I will be going down the utility road more versatile especially off the tee and while still a viable option off the tee

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
