Longer vs Shorter

So we are all tinkerers here... we have all done the "well if this length works but i'm pushing it a bit, a 1/4 inch more would be perfect" and vice versa.  So i pose the question, do you think it is better to error on the longer or shorter size when it comes to your putter?  Me personally always thought that erroring on the shorter side was more manageable until doing it at the end of last year to my back-up mallet while my gamer was getting refinished.  This led to so much inconsistency it was ridiculous.  Not really realizing it until one of my buddies from the group asked if he could try it so we swapped putters.  I went from 32.25 to 34.75 and was draining everything.  It was my last round of the year so I didn't really think about it until getting my gamer back on Saturday and tossing a shaft in it.  i went with a bit longer and it just feels better.

Just my observation from my perspective.

For comfort longer, for keeping eyes over the ball shorter.

Per the fully Equipped Podcast that came out last week, one of their master fitters at their Arizona HQ said around 90% of the players that come in are playing too long of a putter.  Most players should be playing something under 35"

I’m 6’0 and have recently gone to 36” from 34.5”.  I’m much more comfortable over the ball resulting in better contact and a truer more consistent roll.

so to elaborate with me, when going shorter I ended up hunching over the ball and having breakdown of my lead(left) wrist in the putting stroke.  Now I know that this is from bad fundamentals causing the breakdown and terrible putting stroke, but I would like to think that my tinkering had a negative effect on it.  I found that once returning some length to the putter my LHL style became more efficient and allowed me to use my larger muscles more than my smaller muscles.  Just an observation on myself.

There's been a few WRX threads on this in the past and the most useful thing I read was that your height isn't the most relevant factor.  There are a couple.

You could have 10 guys that are all 6'0 tall and they might all putt best using different lengths of putters, and yet there are tonnes of online tables about height versus putter length.

Height when married with Wrist to Floor length, and posture/stance are the most useful factors when tinkering with putter length.

Not everyone can do this but when I started thinking about making a change I went to a local golf store and found a Ping Sigma 2 with the adjustable shaft, then I hit 5-10 putts with each test length.  Then I just took note of the most comfortable length or range of lengths.  Standing in your posture consistently and putting your hands on the putter naturally will give you a great read on what's too short or too long.

For me it's getting the putter long enough so my eyes are over the ball. I'm 6'5" and my eyeline tends to be outside the ball, so I struggle with alignment.

While absolutely happy for anyone to choose their own key set-up principals and fundamentals, I’ve never understood the fascination with “eyes over the ball/line.”  A common tenet of that camp is being able to see the line better - as if one is looking through polarization or Venetian blinds at address.  Every time I’ve consumed that kool-aid my putting has suffered from either a shaft length too short that required me to widen my stance and/or crouch over the ball or a lie angle so upright I had to contort my wrists to take a decent grip.  My putting improved dramatically when I prioritized a stance/posture/grip that allowed me to comfortably and consistently swing the putter head and then tweaked the lie/loft to fine tune matching the starting line to the line as it appears from address.

In general, I prefer putters with more arc (i.e. blades or anything w/ more toe hang) to be a bit longer, around 34.5"-35", and mallets and more face balanced putters to be shorter - around 33.75-34.25". Not sure why, but I think it's just natural for me to tweak my setup a bit to allow the club path to move in its intended motion. Know this probably goes against conventional thinking for having one setup and stroke, etc. and finding the club that fits you best, but I like being able to adapt to all different styles and putter lengths as needed. Makes it easier to have a "rotation" and keeps playing and practicing more interesting IMO.
