Meaningless Club Feature That Annoys You

Wedge stamping (besides indicating a proper loft) is silly for club golfer and has become ridiculous looking on touring pros’ clubs.

I feel like this has already been said, but all the extra graphics on driver faces (looking at you Callaway). I don't need a giant X or a bullseye on the face to tell me where the sweet spot is....

Probably why I have never and will never use a Callaway driver.

Nothing really bothers me, as long as the club looks pretty square at address, I hate clubs that look closed to my eye.  That being said, I find the shaft stickers with the bar code or the price of the club that they have on there at the stores to be my one golf OCD issue.  If I am playing golf with someone and they still have the shaft sticker on their club it just bothers me.  🙂

Other than that I like my stuff pretty standard, except I do like my irons a bit upright.

Having read thru all the posts...I have to admit to this being the one that kind of bugs me.  But it may be due to one of the guys I play with every weekend for years.

Three years ago he got a new set of irons.  Everyone had the stickers on it.  The stickers are still there, most of the ink has worn off & some of the labels are wearing off.  Now when this guy sets-up over a ball, every little twig, pine needle or other imperfection other than what is supposed to be there has to be removed.  It's just the little things one notices that make ya go🙄

The Cobra RadSpeed irons are solid.  But it feels like they are putting carbon fiber on the topline simply to get some more visible tech onto it and to say there's carbon fiber there.  If they really wanted to save maximum weight, they can leave that notch where the carbon fiber goes empty.  Because you know what weighs even less than carbon fiber?...........air.........

But it's carbon fiber so it has to be better. Tungsten was too obvious.

Maybe titanium, but certainly not tungsten.

Proprietary shaft adjustable hosels.

How great would it be if every Mfg used the same hosel design?  You get fitted for the shaft of your choice - then could plug and play that shaft in any head, (past or future)  - instead we deal with every Mfg only having limited shaft selections, upcharges passed to consumer.  The shaft you were fit for 1 year ago is not longer offered - so you go thru the entire process again.

Careful that's bordering on being a meaningful feature...

Complex alignment aids on woods.

TM has a nice small logo, callaway has their chevron, but cobra like types on the word cobra, or titleist types on tsi3. Just put back the small icon. No words.

Yes. It’s used in irons on occasion... Taylor made has a titanium 790 set, I believe...

I think it might have been used in shafts for a brief moment?

I remember Titanium shafts in Taylormade Burner Plus drivers in the late 1980s.  By the early 1990s they were no longer around.

Modern drivers are shaped like oblong saucer dishes. Who thought it was a good idea to black out the face of any driver or metal? Why are garish neon accent colors so widely used? Why is white used? A club should look like a 911 and a not a Chrysler Cordoba.

A dark metallic silver 911... in other words like Titleist drivers used to be when in the D, J and the good looking Titanium driver days.

They should go back to that look - with the little balance point mark on the top - it was attractive and distinguished their drivers from the rest. Why, oh why, did some marketing muppet in Titleist decide to change that crown alignment mark? Does a modern Titleist owner need 'TSI' on the crown to remind them?

titleist_975D2.jpg.a077ee10726b614213471dd2606bc4b5.jpg

And another thing.  If you're going to make it black - then don't add any bullsh!t graphics on the crown, especially not around the back edge... I asked Wishon if acetone would be ok to remove the crown cr@p on their Wishon 519 driver i'm thinking of as it's properly adjustable for lie, glued in hosel... and i'm worried my lovely Adams 9015D (without any crown decoration nonsense) may not last forever.

Will never happen because the OEM have different philosophy. Callaway says it’s important that the shaft always aligns the same way (grip and graphics), ping prefers light weight adapter with less options...others in between. Who has to compromise in your scenario?

  1. The cutout on the hosel of the Ping irons bothers me.  I'm sure there's a reason for it, but don't care for it.

Unfortunately, it also makes me keep thinking that the club will break....

I don't mind the turbulators. I do mind the text "TURBULATORS" on the top of the club head telling me the turbulators I'm looking down at are turbulators. It's a bit silly. You can't miss them.

If we're talking purely meaningless features: stamping on wedges and putters. It feels played out at this point. My hunch is Scotty Cameron is into suicide girls, brought it over to his putters, and it all just got out of hand.

I'm not a fan of any clubs that have either a slot or a sunken indentation on the crown. Anything busy on the top of the club really. As if I don't have enough to worry about stepping up to the ball, now I have what looks like the Grand Canyon, a sunken warehouse loading bay or speed bumps looking back at me. And just to mess you guys up because hitting one of those clubs messed me up for a while, what point are you focusing on in that frame when you're getting ready to hit, the center of the ball? The back of the ball? The face of the club? The alignment aid on the club? The fancy design around or just behind the alignment aid? My brain started to short circuit and hard reboot bouncing back and forth between all of those points, just because of a stupid slot
