getting fitted in Orange County Ca

I've been playing with my current irons (TM Tour Burners) for over 12 years. I have always liked them but I think it's time for some new irons.

I've been looking at the Ping 425's. My first clubs were a set of ping eye2's. I really miss those clubs and have always wanted to go back to Ping.

My question is where is the best place in Orange County to get fitted? I'm looking for the best fit with the shafts offered by Ping with no upcharge.

I looked on Ping's website and they list Roger Dunn in Santa Ana. It says RD is a top 100 fitter. Would this be the place to start?

Does anybody have any experience with Roger Dunn? I would like to hear good or bad.

Also wondering the same thing if anyone has any real local experience. I'm back into the game after a long layoff and still gaming the set I was fit for in late 2001... After some work on the swing I think a full bag fitting is what I need.

No Bogeys is about as local to me as it gets, and they've built me a LW to match my old clubs and regripped the rest of my set. I have nothing but positive things to say so far, but I haven't obviously had a fitting there yet.

My default will probably be there, unless I hear bad things about them or amazing things about somewhere else.

Ping G25 10.5* w/ Diamana 'ahina 70 x5ct stiff (set -0.5 to 10*)

Sub70 Pro Tour 5w w/ Aldila NV NXT 85 stiff

Wishon EQ1-NX 4h, 5i-GW single-length built to 37.5" w/ Nippon Modus3 120 stiff

Sub70 286 52/10, 286 56/12, and JB 60/6 wedges, black, built to 36.75" w/ Nippon Modus3 120 stiff

Sub70 Sycamore Mallet putter @ 36.5" with Winn midsize pistol grip

Any of you guys have pricing from No Bogeys golf?

Recommend you give them a call and ask. Sadly their web site is "under construction", and has been since well before Christmas with no visible change, so they have no pricing there.

When I was in there last, I looked at it and thought it wasn't that unreasonable. Driver fitting was ~$75, but Driver+FW was only $100. There were a bunch of other combinations, like iron fitting, wedge fitting, iron+wedge, putter, even ball.

IIRC, the whole bag fitting though was not a huge upcharge--I thought it was $200... I'm guessing they try to keep the fitting costs down because they'll make it up in selling clubs if you're getting a whole bag fitting.

Dunn in Santa Ana is really good.  They have a playability guarantee that is second to none too.  Almost all the manufacturers have their own fitting bays at Dunn and they have literally everything you can imagine.

I second this. Their whole bag fitting is only $150. Putter fitting saved me bunch of strokes. Ask for Rick.

I haven't been in the area for about a year so I'm not sure if this is still the case but it was beautiful to have 30 days on the course with the clubs and be able to return them for full credit if they didn't work.  I bought a driver that I was just smoking in the store and after two weeks it just wasn't working outside so I took it back and walked out with another one no questions asked.

Yep.

Even better is that they allow 90 days. 😉

Roger Dunn is a no-brainer.  it's not that hard to fit a set of irons, particularly when you know what you want going in.  Key thing is for YOU to take ownership of the fitting and not blindly follow what the fitters says.  Be clear on what you expect.  I suggest keeping to some lightweight shafts since that's what you have been playing the last decade.  Nippon 105 are great shafts and would be a wonderful no cost fit with the 425's for someone coming from those Burners.

Good luck

Ping G30 irons w/Recoil 95

Ping G425 irons w/Accra ICWT 2.0 95
Ping Glide wedges w/Recoil 110
Ping Redwood Anser - the "real deal!"

So how does that work? You need to pick your brand before you get fitted?

For a true fitting in one of the studios, yes. The sales staff is really knowledgeable as well though and will help you in the open hitting area

I would recommend Roger Dunn in Santa Ana as a good starting place.  I know a couple of the guys that work there, they are good at what they do and have had a bunch of friends that have been fit there successfully...  I had a driver fitting done years ago at Cool Clubs (Oak Creek GC) and didnt find it to be any better than what they offer at RD Santa Ana honestly, and like the above poster mentioned, you have a playbility guarantee.  If the clubs don't work out, you have 90 days to return them.  Hard to beat IMO.

Titleist TSr2 10*  GD UB 6s

Ping G430 LST 15* HZRDUS smoke yellow 70s

Ping G430 19* Tour Chrome 2.0 85s

I knew I was going to get a Titleist driver the last time I got fit there but I hit a couple others first and then went to the Titleist room.  The guy who fit me was actually paid by Titleist to be there and he was super knowledgable about their product.

Here are my experiences with fitters in the area. These experiences are from 2017-2020

  • Cool Clubs @ Oak Creek
    • Fitting expertise is there, pleasant guy as well, explains stuff pretty well. The selection on shafts they have for irons is pretty limited. I.e. MMT's they only had 105's but nothing below or above. Same with Steelfibers. 95 flighted and 110 flighted, but no options to try the CW's. You hit off real grass and you see full ball flight on the range which is a huge plus to some. They have pretty much all current heads to try. The discussion of what I was looking for at the beginning on the fitting was somewhat limited. Trackman.
  • True Spec @ Omni La Costa
    • Steve, the fitter there, is a real pro with tour truck experience. He will direct the fitting very well - really knowledgeable and honest guy. Doesn't try and sell you on anything - which is rare for True Spec in my experience. Broad selection of shafts unless you want to his the AD-DI which True Spec doesnt carry due to their "branded" version that's a mix of the AD-DI and AD-MJ (which i didnt like at all). You hit off real grass. Trackman.
  • TaylorMade The Kingdom
    • Obviously only Taylormade gear. I had probably my worst fitting experience here. The facility is great, fantastic looking, just awesome all around. My fitter however, kept providing swing advice throughout the fitting - and this isn't on a specific point i.e. "hey we need to generate more spin, so think of these things" but full-out "swing rework" which got super annoying after a little while. Same happened during the putter fitting. I got this fitting as a gift from my wife and post fitting decided I will not buy TM gear again after that experience. To think she paid $650 for this is a joke. You hit off real grass. Trackman.
  • True Spec Beverly Hills
    • Bad experience. No adjustment of lie's of lofts on clubs. I told the fitter at the start of the fitting what I wanted out of the fitting, that I'm after the fitting not purchasing clubs from them. He was clearly disappointed in that. The guy I had (not Shaun) i think knew barely more than me about the fitting process. I left the fitting not knowing more than I did before and unable to make a real decision. You hit off mats. GCQuad.
  • Golden Golf Mart, San Gabriel
    • Jeff Sy is one of the most knowledgeable fitters I've come across. Great selection of clubs, however, they do not fit with exotic brands. So while you are able to purchase Miura or Epon etc. from them, you can not hit them in a fitting which is a real downer. They have all the major OEMs but when I was there, they did not have Ping heads but that might've been temporary. You hit off mats. GCQuad
  • Joe Kwok, San Francisco
    • Getting fit by Joe is an experience. The guy is a legend for a reason; it seems like that he sees your swing once and immediately discards 10 heads and adds 3 to the short list. Really takes his time with shafts and honing it in to a point where you feel comfortable. I got fit by him a while back after a long injury (18 month out) so he was super patient and encouraging even thou I was swinging it like crap. Yes you pay for the fitting, but you also pay for the experience 🙂 You hit off mats. GCQuad (since 2019)
