Rory switching to X7’s

Recommended Posts

Trottie on Instagram noted the shaft change/testing with the X7 is looking for the right trajectory/spin while moving into the new TP5x golf ball so we could see the change soon.

Photo from Getty today showing Dynamic Gold shaft band. Also wonder if there would be a switch in the wedges to DG.

Yeah that actually looks like a wedge and the build sheet showed the X7's going in everything including wedges.

Looks like he is sticking with the P7MB's.  Surprised he didn't go with the P7TW.

I believe he had significant input in the design of the P7MB so makes sense he'd stick with that.

X7 in wedges is the move. I’m surprised more tour players not in x7 honestly, pretty cool if he plays it for a while.  Maybe more players start asking for x7 stiff graphite like Bryson and we can actually get some rebars released.

Strange. When I got fit into my new callaways, my fitter told me to put x7 in my wedges.

I dont find the X7 overly stiff. Just stinking heavy.. I dont want to work that hard anymore in my old age.. I just recently got a set of modus 120x hard stepped as I wanted something lighter but still stiff lol..

I actually enjoy hitting X7s for the first 9-12 holes... Then I dont want to swing them anymore as I am tired.. lol

The feel and spin control between PX 7.0 and DGX7 is quite noticeable.  DGX7 for moderate tempo, PX 7.0 for fast tempo.  Only time will tell.

Trottie did a live Q&A with Wade Liles on the truck a few hrs ago.. they were building some wedges for Matthew Wolff, but Trottie mentioned Rory's shaft change was to get his spin "right with his new golf ball, new TP5x"

So does this mean create a bit more spin or take some spin off?  My personal experience is the DG shafts will spin more than a Project X shaft of similar stiffness.

he didn't say and then i kept watch all his other instagram stories and he never went into any more depth than that... it was almost as if he had maybe seen ppl talking about it from his build order post and made an offhand comment.

I agree, DG has always been a spinnier shaft for me.

Maybe the new 2021 TP5x balls are even lower spinning, so he needs more in the shaft to keep his numbers in the range he wants?

Saw this change. Love it. I see a huge benefit to this.
I went from PX 6.5 to x100 and things got much better.

I believe he would want to take spin off with the shaft change. I forget where I saw this commented but the old tp5x was akin to the left dash pro v1x - lowest spinning of any tour level ball. The new tp5x spins more so he’s trying get back into the window he had with that old combination.

I actually thought the opposite. He needs more spin and to be able to hit knock downs. No one seems to hit more fliers inside of 150 than Rory. I think this is actually a genius change for him if he can get used to how differently this shaft feels.

He was playing the TP5 last year, not TP5x

The fliers and pulls aren’t the equipment’s fault... as a big Rors fan I personally want to see a coach change.

Oh yeah, you’re right. Very interesting and I have no idea how those spin characteristics compare to the new tp5x ball (it does sound like he’s going to the x edition this time around). Maybe he is going for lower spin from PX.

TXG’s video they posted on the new TP5/5x compared to the Tour Response and the old 5/5x shows the new TP5x spins more with wedges and irons compared to the last model.

If I remember correctly, Rory went to the TP5 for more control with his wedges because of the added spin, so maybe the new TP5x and x7 combo gives him similar playing characteristics to the Project X 7.0 and TP5 combo?

It can be an equipment fault. When I did my wedge fitting my fitter used to work for a shaft company.  He was explaining to me the “why” of softer shafts in wedges in order to get them to load and do their job on full and partial wedge shots. I was 7.0 in irons and 6.5 in wedges going in, left with x100 and s400 and I stopped busting shots long and then leaving the next one short when I thought I made a good swing each time.
