Inside a MuniPuke's Bag -- Questionably "New" for 2021

Recommended Posts

Hello WRX! Just started getting active on here again. I've always enjoyed this section of the forum so I figured it would be fun to do one of these posts. Thanks for checking this post out!

This is my first WITB a long time and lots in the bag has changed over the last few months. A few ageless warriors, some new stuff, some stuff straight off the BST, some clubs stolen from my Dad. It's something of a bizarre blend but I think it keeps things interesting.

A little about me -- I'm a retired high school golfer who couldn't hack it in college. Now I'm anything between 2 and 5 depending on my location in the world and the time of the year and try to stay competitive by playing in Men's Club Tournaments when I can. Hopefully will get seriously back into tournament golf soon as well as get some solid time to practice and take a crack at some long overdue swing changes. Frankly, I'll just be happy if I can get outside.

Hopefully I will be able to get outside in some better lighting tomorrow ... not the greatest lighting at this point in the evening, but in the meantime here it is:

Cool bag - any plans to try the SIM fairway woods? They have a V steel sole so might be a bit more modern tech compared to the V steel?

Thanks!

Not currently looking at the new ones per se, but I have hit maybe 2 balls with Dad's SIM Ti 5-Wood off a mat and it's solid when you catch it--  club is a total rocket ship. He plays both the 3 and the 5 and loves both of them. The issues I have with newer fairway woods (and this is totally operator error) is that my misses with them are really hard for me to play (diving low-left miss) and I can't hit them off the deck well at all. I don't know if this is the result of the newer stuff being lower spinning or a wider, shallower club head just gets in my noggin.

The reincorporation of V-Steel in the sole is interesting though and certainly caught my eye, I'd be curious to see if I'd hit them better off the deck than say, an M5 or M3. I'm definitely a guy who has always been one to hit more down on fairway woods.  . .  I might have to check out SIM next time I'm at a demo location.

TLDR: Not necessarily looking to switch, but I'm intrigued and have never hesitated to tinker with stuff.

I just put my V-Steel 3w back in the bag to replace a F9 3-4W. Maybe giving up a few yards and perfectly struck balls, but hitting it so much more consistent than the F9.

Yeah I've had similar results. Frankly, the only place I truly feel like I'm loosing distance is off the deck -- off the tee hit well I think my T/S goes at least as far as most newer ones in the aggregate. Off the deck I'm probably giving up a bit of yardage though, but I'm not too concerned with it because it's obviously a strong 3-Wood and goes as far as I need a 3-Wood to go.

I was watching a tour spoon on eBay last week but didn’t do it. I carry a 2 deep as my 2nd tee club so didn’t need another one trick pony, doubt I could get the 13* V Steel elevated consistently enough to justify bagging it. I get what I need from the 15*

Nice! Both the 2Deep and the V-Steels are great clubs. I absolutely agree too, if you've got a 2Deep in the bag it would be kinda redundant to carry the Tour Spoon. What's the loft on the 2Deep? 12?

Side note -- Coming from a disastrous experience with the M5 Rocket set at 13.5 I was concerned coming to the Tour Spoon but was happily surprised when it got up in the air no problem without ballooning -- I think that is probably a combination of the fact I have a considerably lighter shaft with a pretty soft tip in it as well as the fact the head probably just isn't as low spinning as the M5 Tour.

Hit the 0311Ts for the first time the other day. First time hitting a fair amount of balls with a hollow body head and S400s. I'm impressed with both the feel off the face and the flight. I also think I'm going to hold off on the hybrid reshaft . . . I'm warming up to the X100 in there. . . we'll see how long that lasts.

Hopefully weather permitting I will get out to the range, the course, or better yet both (after this winter I need it) this weekend.

Quick update a few weeks into the season:

Wedges

-The MG2s have been swapped out for a RTX ZipCore 54-12 Full Grind sand wedge and a Vokey Cold Forged 58-04 low bounce K lob wedge (the latter off the BST/Front page). Haven't hit the Cleveland yet, and haven't played a Cleveland wedge in 7 or so years. I've had the chance to play a few times with the Vokey now and chip around with it a lot and I'm definitely a fan. I've only heard good things about the RTX and can't wait to get it out on the course.

Hybrid

-I was concerned at first about the RAZR Tour hybrid for two reasons -- first because of the fact I hadn't played a hybrid in years, and second because of the fact it had a steel shaft. I've actually been quite happy with how this club has turned out, and it flies extremely straight and actually has quite a bit of pop.

Putter

-I had been looking to convert a Scotty Futura X Dual Balance into a long putter so I could have a little variety in the putter domain, but that project has failed miserably (update: might try to use heat and bend it at hosel per advice in the thread) so it looks like the trusty Ping is going to continue to be the only putter (for the time being).

Iron Shafts

-Not sure what to think of the S400s in the irons. I just started hitting the irons better than I had been, but I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the S400 weight and feel in the longer clubs. I may throw in some soft stepped or straight in Nippon Super Peening Blue Xs to see how they work, as I've heard they're really smooth and will be just a touch lighter like the old legacy DG S300s.

Wedge Shafts

-That being said, I've really liked the weight and flex of the TI S400 in the 50 degree and in the shorter irons, so I may wind up putting TI S400 or Modus3 125 Wedge into all of the wedges sometime down the line. Prior to having these I had played S200 for 99% of my golfing life.

-Really happy to be outside playing golf again.
