Anyone played in the Monday Pro-Am's on the PGA Tour ?

Hey...never played in one, but this account on Twitter "Monday Q Info (@acaseofthegolf1)" does pretty good coverage of them.

Couple guys from my hometown area were playing in the Korn Ferry qualifier this past Tuesday, luckily one actually made it through. Kind of wild at one of the courses the payoff was 6 for 3 spots, had to shoot -7 to just get there. Every shot counts.

Wild to see some names who are qualifying, just makes you think how difficult it is to not only get on tour, but to stay there. Especially now with no actually Q School.

If so, tell us about it. I know you're not getting TW, DJ or Rory on a Monday but without trashing anyone dish something interesting.

Think you meant to say Wednesday Pro-Am.

Was asking because I play golf with a few guys who played the mini tours and one had his card for about a minute. He  told me he played in a couple Monday events, 4 Ams +1 Pro in the group. Ams paid $10,000 and he got paid $1,000 for playing,  said there was a guy who used to work the range the week before to get guys to play in them. Players who got a sponsor's invite usually played in them to. This was 9-10 years ago.

Actually at probably 70%+ of the tournaments there is a Monday Pro-Am. It's usually of the 1st and 10th tee from 8am to 10am, though there a few that are in the afternoon.

Depending on the tournament occasionally there will be a top tier player.  Players get paid a $1000.00 and sometimes it's a cart event where players can ride.  Some players give their caddies the day off, some caddies use it as a day to chart the course.

Interesting. Thought that died out long ago. Thanks.

There’s still q school, just last year there wasn’t one since they combined the KFT seasons

Monday’s are usually practice rounds and maybe some local celebrities in a charity hit and giggle, junior clinics and whatnot. I’m sure there is a Monday pro am once or twice a year but is not the norm afaik.

Monday pro ams are a weekly thing. They’re typically lesser names than the ones playing in Wednesday. Monday pro am the pros are paid (at least on the KFT) as opposed to the Wednesday where they aren’t.

Not quite what you are looking for perhaps but on the Euro Tour a few years ago when the Scottish Open was at Dundonald, my friend played in the Tuesday Pro-Am which was the one where some of the lesser players teed it up. My friend played through his work and went out with Renato Paratore. He didn’t seem to have the best English but was friendly and helped them out where he could. The gift bag seemed to be the biggest takeaway that my friend got from it, the amount of logo’d gear he comes out with is mad.

do you get ~$100k worth of stuff?

edit: 2020 oscar gift bag was apparently valued at ~$225K, my mistake

I played in one about 10 years ago. It was meh... I got paired with a pro who hadn't won since around 2000 and was really struggling to keep his card at the time. He probably shot 75 that day and actually got beat by two of the amateurs in our group. Fortunately, I didn't have to pay anything to play as my company was one of the tournament sponsors,  but I would have been pretty pissed if I had paid to play with that guy.

Not all, but most of the pros who usually play in the Monday events are the ones who genuinely need that "appearance fee" (i.e. the guys hovering around 200th on the money list or lower) or the guys who have to play because it is required as part of their sponsor's exemption.

Not "played in" but my wife who was in convention sales for the city we used to live in had two of her "guests" play in a wed pro-am in which she got to walk along with. There were some rules for the Am's though, had to have a GHIN and be less than an 18 handicap. Her group drew Bill Haas. They all had a great time and she said Bill was amazing with the group, offering tips etc. and shot around 63 from the member tees that day. Her boss had the stomach flu that week and I ALMSOT got to play in the pro-am, but he recovered just enough to be able to play. 😞

I caddied at the Bay Hill Pro Am a couple times when I was in college. We got paid by the Ams, tickets for the week and a round at Bay Hill. I did one Pro Am for the LPGA at Grand Cypress also. Didn’t get paid for the LPGA one but got tickets and free golf.

Thanks for the post, Bill must be like his dad Jay in that he gets it. You take care of the people that take care of you.

True (unless I understand it incorrectly from my minimum research), isn't Q school just for Korn Ferry players, you can't just sign up and play like you use to right?

There are multiple stages of Q school. For the "just sign up" guys there is the pre-qualifying stage. If you make it through that there's then first and second stages before moving on to the Q school finals, which is where you'd earn status on the KF tour.

Many pros will have some kind of exemption (based on past performance) to get through some of those different stages of qualifying, either to second stage or all the way to the finals.

First part not anymore.  Second part is still true today.

Played in a Pro Am of a Senior Tourney, about ten (ish) years ago.  Two day Pro Am.  It was really cool.  Enjoyed it a lot.  The pros (a different one each day) were awesome, as were the caddies.  I’d previously attended  many PGA Tour events and some majors, but playing a full round with a pro you really see that they play on a very different level.

My company does a sponsorship at the Wells Fargo for our clients and get a  spot in the Wed pro-am.  1st year we “drafted” Patrick Reed right after he won the Masters.  I caddied for my client in the group, had a great time in between the ropes.  Reed was mostly quiet and reserved, a few small one liners is all, and had a bunch of interviews with reporters coming off of his win at Augusta while walking down fairways, so wasn’t much interaction that I recall.   Kessler was the best though- smart-a** funny, good insight into Tour minutiae, reading putts for our group, seemed like a good dude, didn’t fight anyone, but no hecklers either for Reed yet.  Could call it the Caddie-Am for how much fun our group had with Kessler.

2nd year we had Keegan Bradley on Wednesday; was a great time, guy was a blast.  That year our general counsel also got to play Monday with Malnati and said the vibe was way more laid back, and with the Pros playing Monday trying to make a living, it was way more down to earth versus Wednesday.  Malnati was a top notch, humble dude for sure and left a great impression.  We pull for the guy in the office when he tees it up of course.

Last years Pro-Am died with COVID, so we’ll see what 2021 brings!

Typically the full time players who are keeping themselves within the top-150 in FedEx points don't arrive until Monday afternoon until the earliest.  Particularly if they made the cut the week before.  They tend to try to have a set schedule as best as they can, so that's why they usually don't play in the Monday Pro-Am.  Getting $1K for playing in it sounds about right.  That can pay for their caddie's base salary for the week.

Tuesdays is usually when the players really go to work.  They'll play either 9 or 18 holes and then put in hours on the range and the green. This the day they are most likely to fiddle around with their equipment.

I know that a few years ago it cost $8K/player to play in the Wednesday Pro-Am at Bay Hill.  Those are mandatory participation, but selected by the Tour.  The rookies on Tour don't play in the Wednesday Pro-Am for which they are forever thankful.  Not all of the rest of the players will play in every Wednesday Pro-Am.  And nobody I know of has been able to figure out how they determine if a player plays in the Wednesday Pro-Am that week or not.
