I am SO tired of the pun-filled happy talk from the CBS crew on early coverage

Are you like me... just SICK of that mindless pablum that serves as golf commentary?  There's the not-the-least-bit-witty Nick Faldo jamming in every pun he can muster, followed by Frank Nobilo who attempts to "top" him with even more nonsense and the pathetically subservient Dottie Pepper who, apparently, is contractually obligated to cough up a courtesy laugh at these sad, desperate and woefully UNFUNNY time-wasters.  If I'm a director in the truck and I hear this relentless palaver, I'm pulling a Frank Chirkinian and screaming to one and all: "Shut the HELL up!"  How anyone can find this low-rent form of humor amusing while I'm trying to actually watch golf is completely beyond me.

I quite enjoy it. It’s golf. There’s not much to talk about in early round coverage. I’m glad they’re not droning on and on about golf. There’s only so many ways you can describe a missed put, or a shot 15ft away from the pin. Golf is boring to commentate in the early rounds. It’s only interesting to commentate on Sunday’s and during majors.

I don't understand the Faldo hate. I've always enjoyed his insight. I think he's well spoken and respectful. Same with Nobilo. Both are gentlemen. Also agree with the above poster, a sport like golf, the commentary has to fill a lot of idle time. It's not easy.

It's like calling a baseball game.  Very difficult.  Lots of time to fill.  Every joke or clever comment isn't going to be a home run.  You do want to hit some singles and doubles though.  As a general observation, most of the announcers are mediocre.  But they don't generate any hate in me.

Seems like Faldo, Nobilo, and Pepper genuinely enjoy each others company. I found it refreshing and enjoy when they give each other the needle a bit. Immleman occasionally gets in on the action as well.

Simple solution. Don't watch it at all. Solves all of your "problems". I'm sure when you were an active sports writer not all of your readers agreed with your pablum.

While the OP's rant is a little much, I see the point.  It's funny, when Faldo first came on the scene I liked him and couldn't understand the haters.  But over time I've grown more tired of Faldo.  I suppose he had freshness going for him and the credibility of being a 6 time major champion.  But that's worn out.  He's just not that entertaining and rarely offers the insight of a major champion, but he's always trying hard with the jokes.

 

But it doesn't really bother me as I've learned over the years to just tune out the announcers and watch the golf. It would be nice though if Faldo stopped pointing out cultural differences between UK and US and trying to turn it into something funny.  That schtick is well worn out.

or...hit the mute button and listen to something else, while glancing at the actual golf shots.  I tend to do this with all sports now

I’m in a German speaking part of the world. The only way to watch golf is on paid sports TV. Whenever I turn it on, there’s two audio channels. Let me tell you, the German commentary is SO bad I want to throw my drink at the TV. They put me to sleep with their unoriginal, lame „insight“. And no co-host, just one guy rambling.  I’m grateful for Nick, Frank and Dottie. 

But yeah, I’m definitely learning some high profile English humor: „What do you call a seagull that flies over the bay?“ „Tell me.“ „A baygull.“ Slow clap for Sir Nick, the master of dad jokes. 

Still, much better than „our“ version of Golf commentary.

👍  👌 Faldo can be a tad bit egotistical but knowledgable, Nobilo is alright. I enjoy Immelman.  I've never understood why golf announcing is so chatty yet silence is golden on the course. I'm completely cool with with hearing the birds, a practice swing, the wind or the sound of a tee shot. Better yet, I enjoy the player, caddie dialogue. Bones and John Wood will both get better. Enjoy Feherty more than every other announcer. Some announcers need to take a page out of the Joe Buck and Troy Aikman play book.... On second thought return that margarita machine.

I have no problem with any one individual but the overall production is overdone and there is simply too much blabbering. The more blabbering talent and production, the more commercials needed to pay for it. It's obnoxious after a while and one reason why I rarely watch golf anymore.

I don’t think we’ll ever like the announcers no matter who they put in there, but I wish they focused more on players within, say, +/- 2 shots of the cut for at least a decent part of the Friday coverage. I’d rather see more of these guys hitting consequential shots than Justin Thomas putting meaningless 5 footers or a Cameron Tringale 2 putting from twenty feet 8 times in 90 minutes to get “safely in”. I’d like to see a guy on the cut line with a bad lie on 18, another guy at T66 debating on giving a 3 wood a go over water, and so on.

I kinda feel like this is just the flavor of the month, there's multiple threads on hating announcers and there's a simple solution don't watch, or the mute button. Done.

I subscribed to PGA Tour live on Amazon Prime so I get early coverage of the tournaments and don't have to wait for GC to come on. Also don't have to listed to Faldo, Nobilo and Pepper, cost is $ 60.00 a year I believe
