I am SO tired of the pun-filled happy talk from the CBS crew on early coverage

At least we aren’t hearing last year’s catch phrase every 10 seconds

He hits a heavy ball, he puts a heavy hit on it, he’s a heavy hitter ... blah blah blah

it comes down to CBS and NBC's pwn fault, in a post TW golf world they have very little content to really keep the viewer glued to the TV, but had they covered other golfers besides TW people would have gotten to know other golf personalities, also without Mickelson there is no drama

Not sure what the alternative is but it sure isn't in their current announcing team

I certainly get the OPs point.  At times, I find them annoying as well, but when they show the PGA Tour Live coverage on Golf Channel, that's basically torture in its boringness, so I look forward to the CBS coverage coming on.  The only one I find consistently annoying is Dottie Pepper.  Her attempts at humor just never hit home with me.

I get a little annoyed sometimes by constant babble of the announcers, especially when they love to say everyone who works out is built like a linebacker, or every single low ball flight went "knee high to a grasshopper". Some of them out there aren't as bad, but I can't help but roll my eyes at the majority of what is said.

However, I probably have a different outlook than some because my absolute favorite viewing experiences were watching early morning European Tour coverage with Peter Alliss. He never said too much or too little and often let the airways go silent to the noises of golf at the right times. Watching that coverage always felt like enjoying a warm cup of morning coffee or a nice fire; relaxing.

Are you like me... just SICK of that mindless pablum that serves as golf commentary?  There's the not-the-least-bit-witty Nick Faldo jamming in every pun he can muster, followed by Frank Nobilo who attempts to "top" him with even more nonsense and the pathetically subservient Dottie Pepper who, apparently, is contractually obligated to cough up a courtesy laugh at these sad, desperate and woefully UNFUNNY time-wasters.  If I'm a director in the truck and I hear this relentless palaver, I'm pulling a Frank Chirkinian and screaming to one and all: "Shut the HELL up!"  How anyone can find this low-rent form of humor amusing while I'm trying to actually watch golf is completely beyond me.

I’m just tired of Faldo.

Nick's response when he heard someone was on about him on wrx:  "Bloke must be In Too Deep and living in a Land Of Confusion.  Really, mate, I'd have No Reply At All, but you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been, it's all been a pack of lies. Get me?"

Nick likes to talk about Genesis at the Genesis.  🙂

Funny think about Nick, when he was the best player in the world people thought he was a robot, no personality, too serious, obsessed with his job, the terminator.  Now he is a big goof ball.  I don't mind this crew, I like Gannon as the lead, Frank, and Trevor are fine, non offensive.  Dottie meh.  The only time I really get annoyed is when Nantz begins his self aggrandizing prose, has there ever been an announcer who thought more of themselves than Nantz?

At the end of the day, I don't get worked up about who is doing the telecast.  It's just sports on TV, this isn't life or death.

Not an easy job to fill up that much live air time, but I do get tired of the tedious repetitive nature of their discussion/banter/humor at times.  Wish they'd talk a little more about the behind the scenes stuff that we don't see on tv every week.  Pull back the curtain a bit so to speak.

Also, a personal pet peeve is when they say "oh, he got a bit unlucky there"  about 30 times per broadcast (I'm hearing Ian Baker Finch's voice as I typed that).  And apparently the players rarely get lucky, just unlucky.

I agree wholeheartedly. At this point, the level of self-importance he oozes is beyond off-putting. It's too bad, I used to like him back in the day. But now, whether it's his phony excitement during football with Romo or his bloated sense of his own value during The Masters...it's enough to make Jim McKay puke.

Sorry, I don't get the Nantz hate at all. I have no idea why some are constantly bashing him. If you don't like him, that's fine, but that doesn't change the fact that he is very good at what he does.

As for the babbling of the other commentators, keep in mind that what we have seen so far this week is early-round coverage where the production is far looser. They have a lot of time to fill and they are having a bit of fun. Even at the Masters, where they are taught to be reverent and deferential in their coverage, you still get a bit of this. I recall some years ago when an early round was put into weather delay not long after beginning to air, so they went back to earlier in the day where they had recorded what CBS was doing as a rehearsal. Those comments were not quite what you would get during the regular broadcast, being much more off the cuff. These early round broadcasts remind me of that.

Is it just American, South African, English, and New Zealand old white folks you are prejudiced against?  Are you cutting the Englishman Peter Alliss slack because he is no longer around or because he was born in Germany?  Your prejudice seems very complicated making it very hard for us to determine exactly which flavor of racist you are.

This is why I stay on TPs good side ; )

What do you guys think of Mike Tirico? I really enjoy his commentary. I don't mind Nantz too much, I do agree he has somehow become just as big as the game he is commenting about.  But that's also a compliment to his credit his voice is synomous with big time events.

Solid pro.  To me he is sort of matter of fact guy who can break down the events that transpired.  To me he is professional without being over the top, he doesn't really add much to the telecast, but he doesn't take away from it either.

I’m not racist at all. Perhaps it was a poor phrase of speech. I’ll edit it now.

Mike Tirico is excellent, offering solid information without annoying fluff or flourishes.  Speaking of unnecessary, as the third-round weather delay ended and the final group teed off, Dottie Pepper briefly outlined Tyler McCumber's fingernail mishap via hotel window.  Of course, Faldo just HAD to jam in one more pun, thinking is was entertaining to speak of the wildly unclever "window pain."  Dottie uttered her approval.

THAT'S the kind of crap I referred to in my Original Post.

Tirico is fine, although like all the other golf broadcast anchors he went off the deep end any time Tiger was in contention. But I remind you that when he was calling golf for ABC/ESPN he also got slammed here and elsewhere by the usual critics. Now that he is with NBC they tend to use him mostly as a host on their big events while providing relief to Hicks from time to time.

Not judging by the hot women these guys are married to.  Jason Dufner was unlucky, then lucky and now unlucky.  He'll bounce back.

A decade ago, these guys only had to be witty and smart for 2, maybe 3 hrs.  Now they have to come up with crap to say for 6+ hours.  I'd be spouting "authentic frontier gibberish" too.
