NC Golf trip late March

WEEman96

Recommended Posts

I'm just out of college so balling on a budget. Couple of buddies and I are planning a little DIY golf trip to the Carolinas the third week of *March*. Plan on driving down, playing a few rounds in mt. Airy area and then hitting a course on the way home. Driving down from Jersey.

Itinerary looking like:

Day 1: travel

Day 2: cross Creek + another

Day 3: cedarbrook + another

Day 4 travel + round on way home

Anyone have any insight on what to expect condition/weather wise and any suggestions on budget courses to add to the trip?

Thanks in advance!!

Trip like these are great and you will remember them for a lifetime.

To the point above it would be good to know where from and why you're looking to go here.  The weather in Mt Airy will be very hit or miss this time of year.  If you have flexibility it may be worth scouting out driving a few more hours south.  It could be 5-10 degrees warmer and limit frost delays or even courses closing.

I'd also note depending on the days of the week and if it ends up being some warmer than usual days the courses will be packed most anywhere.

If you get lucky you may have have a high of 60...probably 50 is a better guess.  Mornings will be chilly.  Feb in northern North Carolina can be pretty much a crapshoot.  Daylight may not allow for 2 rounds on 2 courses with travel involved especially if a frost delay occurs.  Wet and dormant Bermuda isn't the most fun to play but dress warm and have fun.

  • 2 months later...

I've got a foursome and am going to be coming down to NC from from NJ March 18 through March 21. Planning on getting four rounds in. Gonna be staying right around Mt. Airy. Work in the golf business so couldn't get off work later in the year so I am going as late as possible. We're just outta college so doing a budget trip. Looking at Cross Creek and Cedarbrook for sure since we've heard good things. Other courses are up for debate.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on public courses near the area that are good for those ballin on a budget and also would like to know what to expect weather wise and course condition wise. This is our first attempt at a little golf retreat and hoping that we picked a good time to go.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the advice guys. I edited the post to include where I'm driving from. Actually ended up booking a three night stay outside of mt airy.

Plan is to drive from NJ to mt airy on first day. Then play cross creek and maybe pilot knob second day

Cedarbrook and one other third day

Then morning round and drive home fourth day.

Switched trip to late March so that the weather will be less of a toss up

Would appreciate a trip report when you get back -- We drive from Michigan to Pinehurst every spring and frequently stop in Mt. Airy overnight but have never played any of the courses there, we usually end up playing in the Triad or further south the first day.

Will be sure to update for ya!!

Olde Mill in Laurel Fork, Va is not too far away and a great course.  I have only played in the summer so not sure what it would be like in March.

Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech is not too far off I81 and is one of my favorites.  Disclaimer that I am biased for that course as a VT alum.

Funny enough we were sorta planning on hitting that on the way home. Course looks awesome and love Pete dye. Also been a VT football fan since I was a kid so a little bias for me also 😁
