ZX5 vs. ZX7 -- a 6HC's review

You think the Srixons are popular simply because Koepka won the Phoenix Open with them? He won all of his majors with Mizunos. There are several good irons out there from all the big name brands.  I really like what Wilson Staff does with their irons.  Would love to play their blades, but alas, I need some work before I get there.  The CBs were out of stock when I got fit and every shaft that I was considering was an upcharge.  I think most on here went and got fit into the Srixons.  I know I did.

I ordered a ZX5 7i and a ZX7 8i to test. On grass. The stuff out on the golf course. One of Srixon’s claim to fame is the turf interaction which could be great for some and not so great for others depending on their swing. But not clear hitting off a mat would tell the same story as sod.

What a PGA pro plays has zero influence on my purchase as I’m no PGA pro. A man’s gotta know his limitations…and I have many. 🙃

Word of the YouTube video got me to cancel my ZX5/7 combo order.  If a reviewer hit five shots with each iron and the dispersion was slightly better with one, the verdict is in.

Especially if you think “I could beat that guys brains in”.
Really though, it’s like Mattie Boy said today “if you’re buying golf equipment because of some guy on YouTube you got serious problems.”

I would never cancel my order because of a video as I know your just kidding but it's not just on You Tube video's, I've seen it in actual testing during demo days and by others during fitting sessions and myself. If you're wanting to hit what BK hits then fine. The 5 and 7's are pretty similar in looks but let's be honest many here are jumping on board because of what others have said in their reviews on here without ever trying them.  It's funny how so many have to mix their sets to get what is best for them. Then you have to deal with such gap differences. Srixon was such an under rated brand till BK won with them. Why don't people try other brands like Wilson as there is a brand that should get more attention but not many Pro's play them like they did in the past. You wouldn't believe how Callaway sales have sky rocketed since Phil just won the PGA Championship.

I don’t know if you have been paying attention but a lot of guys have won with Srixon irons. A couple of the last few majors were won with them. Including the Masters this year. No doubt the lions share of market percentage goes to the most marketed big brands but that in no way is an indication of how good a set of irons are.

Good luck w/ your search for new irons. I'm sure someone else will happily take the clubs you were about to order.

And as far as Brooks goes, had his putter not been balky Phil would just have another runner up. Did it on a gimpy knee to boot.

I was waiting for this as I knew someone had an excuse for him. If BK's knee was really bothering him, he should have shut down and followed his Dr's advice.  This is how a chronic knee condition happens. I think I saw some pretty bad iron shots during the 4th round as it wasn't just his putting but whatever. Phil out played him so now let's not give Phil any credit for his win. OMG. Srixon are some nice irons I just want to mention that there are so many other brands out there just as good and BK did helped Srixon ZX7's get put on the short list of irons to buy. It was also pathetic when he got mad at his play last year and broke his Mizuno irons out of frustration.

No need to be offended when other brands get mentioned when trying to find out if anyone has made a comparison or start making excuses why a certain player didn't win as I'm glad BK didn't win even thou I really thought he would.

 I am thinking of doing a combo like the following for ZX5 and ZX7.  I feel that I have to bend the ZX5 5i 2 degrees weaker to have a good gap with ZX5 4i and ZX7 6i.  Would it make sense or should I rather bend it 1 degree weaker only (24* -> 25*)?

4i ZX5  22* -> 23* (1 degree weaker)

5i ZX5  24* -> 26*  (2 degrees weaker)

6i ZX7  28* -> 29*

7i ZX7  32* -> 33*

8i ZX7  36* -> 37*

9i ZX7  41*  (keep as it is)

pw ZX7  46*

I think you need to hit the clubs, then bend. I find stock lofts are fine, currently moving to zx5 at 6i. Math says I should have gapping issues, so far real world I’m not seeing it, but I seem to hit the zx5 and zx7 about the same distance so ymmv.

I play 4* gaps in my longer irons (4-7) and they are 3/8" increments.  The 7 iron is about standard(if there really is such a thing as standard), and my 8, 9, PW are 1/4" increments.  They are 4 and 5* gaps.

For me, this accomplishes the gapping I want.  I have 12-15 yards difference on well struck shots between clubs.  I have a low 3/4 cut I can play that takes about 7 -8 yards off and is less affected by the wind.  I really only play that shot with the 8 iron down.

I have a buddy that plays standard length irons from the factory and has 12-15 yard gaps in between his irons(790 and 770 set). I also have a buddy that hits his 7 and 6 iron almost the same distance and then his 5 iron is 18 yards longer than his 6, and the lofts are good(I checked and he had another club builder check).  Asking a company to bend without having hit the irons because you are expecting one to fly a bunch farther is a fools errand.  It rarely works well, basing bending off of numbers in a bay off of a mat is just as bad.

Order them stock, try them, get out late one afternoon and check your distances, or if you have arccos or something similar even better.  Keep your eye on ebay and other places for a mitchell, it is the best money I have ever spent on my golf game, I snagged mine for 400 shipped about 5 years ago.

Callaway, which belongs to the Zacks Leisure and Recreation Products industry, posted revenues of $651.62 million for the quarter ended  2021, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 13.98%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $442.28 million. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates four times over the last four quarters. Phil's win sure didn't hurt. As far as the exact numbers I don't have that but I know of 2 golf galaxy stores and one Dick's Sporting Good's store are on back order for some of their equipment as even they said after Phils win equipment has been selling like hotcakes. Why would this surprise anyone, Remember when J.Rose won with his Honma irons 1st time out, they had an increase in sales as there even a few topic on here about Honma clubs when never before did anyone ever mention their name. It's pretty common to go out and buy what their favorite player uses. I like what I have because they fit me pretty good and have everything I'm looking for in feel, looks, forgiveness as distance is average as the lofts aren't all jacked up like most. Im Not Surprised Nate Diaz GIF by UFC

If this was a Rick and Morty episode, then I could understand how Phil winning in May 2021 increased Callaway's profits for the quarter ending in March 2021. Now where is that portal gun, I need some ice cream!

Sure ok .. and I'd wager numbers are up across the board for all major OEMs.  And there is an actual separate topic about backordered Srixon orders. There is nothing unique here to Callaway sorry

And I'm sure you know the last 2 major winners prior to Sunday are bagging Srixon irons as ambassadors .. And finally what does this have to do with zx5 vs zx7 irons ...?  I'm sure Callaway makes a fine iron as do most OEMs.  Wait .. PHIL is that you?!

The Cobras start with a stronger pw and use use 4* increments and the Srixon start at 46* and use 5* low irons and the the gaps narrow.  Many are finding the “modern” gapping promotes netter yardage gaps which is what really matters. Plus the Cobra’s are half an inch longer throughout the set. The Wilson Staff CB start at 46* and use traditional 4* gaps. They are a quarter inch longer than the Srixon.  If that suits you better buy them

As for tour use?  Knowing. brooks uses them would more likely have caused me to use somethIng else. But this is my third set of Srixon.

I use them because they work.

Maybe, that’s why I asked. Just got a set off the bay for a good price. Listed as used. When they arrived (from a dealer I had purchased from before) they were in a box appearing to be from Srixon with the label describing the clubs as a custom order. They are brand new never hit. However... only the 4 and 7 iron had a serial number. The set of 765-965 combos they were to replace had serial numbers on all heads.  I put in an email to Srixon but haven’t heard back yet. If they are fake they are damn good ones and the ctaper shafts seem legit to. Will keep you posted on what Srixon says.
