Resort Course Within 1.5 Hours CLT

First time poster.

I've had enough of the CT winter and am planning to fly down to the Carolinas the first or third week of March for one and hopefully two days of golf. My wife is coming with me, so I’m looking for a resort with a course, no more than a 1 1/2 drive from CLT airport.  I may have to high tail it back North with little notice, so it has to be close.  So far, the only thing I’ve found that looks good is Grandover Resort in Greensboro.  It appears that the East Course has plenty of availability, while the West has none.  I know nothing of the course, but at this point, going on almost 3 months without stepping onto a course, I’m in no way choosy.

Any knowledge of Grandover or other recommendations are very much appreciated.

Thanks.

How locked in to Charlotte are you? I'd fly to Raleigh, and go to Pinehurst area. Tobacco Road is in Sanford, which is on the way to Pinehurst, and Pinehurst has a lot of choices. Even closer, Duke has a really good course, with a very nice hotel on property. The university courses at NC State and UNC are not resort courses, but I would doubt the courses at Grandover are any better. They would be a 30-40 minute drive from Duke.

I have not been to Grandover and can’t speak to that.  My recommendation for weather in March would be to go south from CLT.  Columbia, SC is likely to be 10 degrees warmer than Greensboro.  The challenge is that there are not any really good stay and play options.  If you were willing to drive for golf you could stay somewhere like the Ballantyne Hotel, which is just down the road from CLT on the south side.  From there you could drive for golf.  For example, Cobblestone is probably around a 1h drive (just north of Columbia).  If you are not picky for golf there are a number of other public options available in places like Fort Mill and Rock Hill.

Don't they have a pretty good course at Ballantyne?

Yes.  I have not played it, but did research it a bit once.  Sounded like it gets busy/crowded.  But, definitely an option.

I have played both courses the East and West. The East is definitely worth playing. Grandover is really nice. Like a previous poster said I would prer to head towards sandy soil. We have had soooo much rain here this winter and in March you could have 70 degrees or 30 degrees.
Pinehurst is 2 hrs but if that’s too far Grandover is a really good option. Sedgefield is 5 min from Grandover. If you have free time you should drive over and see that Ross Classic.

Thank you all.  I can’t make it to RDU, as I may have to get back quickly, and RDU is 2 legs, or a longer drive to CLT.

I’ll look further south, but resort options seem to be limited.

As far as conditions, if I can find temperatures near 60 and conditions that aren’t worse than damp, I’ll be happy as a clam.

You probably will be ok with the temp, but the Bermuda will still be dormant, so it still might be a bit damp. It’s really a toss up on the weather. It could be shorts weather, or it could be cold and wet. Obviously, your chances of good weather would be a lot higher the third week of March rather than the first week.
