MGA Question 20

Recommended Posts

20. In stroke play, A’s ball lies on the putting green forty feet from the hole. B’s ball is just off the putting green twenty feet from the hole. A removes the flagstick and putts, the ball comes to rest five feet above the hole. A places a coin behind the ball but does not lift it. B requests the flagstick be put back into the hole. Unbeknownst to B and during the backswing, a gust of wind causes A’s ball to roll. While B’s ball is rolling towards the hole the balls collide and B’s ball is deflected into the hole while A’s ball comes to rest twenty feet from the hole.

What is the ruling?

A. Neither A nor B is penalized. A’s and B’s strokes must both be cancelled and replayed.

B. Neither A nor B is penalized. A must play the ball from its new position. B’s ball is holed.

C. A must replace the ball and play from the original position. B’s ball is holed and must add two penalty strokes to the score for the hole.

D. A must replace the ball and play the next stroke from in front of the coin. B’s ball is holed and must add two penalty strokes to the score for the hole.

Easy one...has to be B

Spoiler

because thats the only answer that has B's ball holed w/out penalty. Since he was in the GA his ball simply accidentally hit something and it is played as it lies (11.1a). A plays from new position since he hasn't lifted and ball moved by natural force

Mga have amended their answer to Q 20 in their 2021 Quiz making their original Answer B incorrect.

More Kudos to them?😀😀

From Mga website:

20 No Correct Answer Provided (See Below)

Q#20: Based on clarification we’ve received from the USGA, Player A must cancel and replay their original putting stroke under Rule 11.1b, Exception 2.
Q#20 (Continued): Player B must play next from where their ball came to rest under Rule 11.1b.

So basically they are saying that on a putt that "comes to rest" but is never lifted, if it starts to move again due to natural forces - then that movement is considered a continuation of the first putt?

We know whether the player put his coin there or not doesn't really matter (since he didn't lift it)...so all the movement is part of the original putt

That sure is a bizarre interpretation and creates interesting potential scenarios.

Stroke Play. Player A and B both have their balls at rest on the putting green. A putts and his ball stops about 1 meter left from the hole. Player A does not mark nor lift his ball. Player B putts and his ball stops close to A's ball. As soon as B's ball has stopped a gust of wind causes A's ball to move and collide with B's ball. Ruling: Player A get 2 penalty strokes because the movement of that ball was continuation of A's previous putt.

Does that make any sense? Not to me, no sir.

We have previous RB rulings that cover the following scenarios:

A and B are on the green. A putts, while ball is in motion, wind blows B's ball and it comes to rest in the path of A's moving ball.

A and B are on the green. A is a long way from hole and putts. B is not watching and takes their putt while A's ball is in motion. B's ball comes to rest in the path of A's moving ball and is struck.

In each case, A gets the general penalty under 11.1a Exception.

This new response to MGA 20 is a further wrinkle in the strange rule 11 outcomes.

You are as familiar with the answer to your question as anyone. They are in the Inbox of the email directory of the person that sent in the question - just like the direct answers you have received to any questions you have sent in. But in this case, the q/a's can be very succinctly summarized, as per above.
