Best way to normalize range ball data with Mevo LM?

Not all range balls are the same, but what's the best way to adjust the Mevo to give you accurate numbers.  I saw one review suggesting using an altitude of 5,000 feet.

 

I assume the best way is to hit 5 normal balls at the range with one club, and then keep hitting range balls with the same club and experimenting with different altitudes until you get the data to match your distances with the normal balls.  Any other ideas or suggestions?

I think you've hit on the strategy on normalizing for carry and total distances, because I don't think altitude will adjust spin measurements. If your range is like mine with a half of the range balls pulled out of the trees on the course, then you can set aside five good ones and not sacrifice your own gamers. Also, if you've taken lessons with a trackman you could go ahead and use that data. Also, I think Mevo's numbers are more precise with straighter shots—you could also try and control for that variable when hitting your five standard-setters

This is the exact thread I needed.  Did you end up settling on the 5,000 mark to "normalize" the range ball data?

 

I've noticed that the discrepancy increases as club loft decreases.  The "Average Total Distance" is coming from my Garmin watch (2+ years of data) and the "Average Carry" is from the Mevo after one range session.  

 

I would say that the data between the Mevo and my normal carry is pretty close until I start getting to the 7 iron/8 iron.

Super helpful, thanks for posting. I'm assuming the Average Total Distance from your watch is also carry distance? Also, are all the Mevo distances from hitting into a net or at the range? Though most of what I've read and found shows that accuracy decreases with loft, numbers from hitting into a net might account for some of that discrepancy

Garmin is total distance, so there's no way to get the carries from that, but my carry distances with the 6 iron and down aren't that far off from my total distances compared to the Garmin data.  I typically have a "drop and stop" approach, especially with the greens that I play on.  The Garmin averages, mostly with the longer clubs, drop a few yards in the spring (wet fairways, cold weather) and then bounce back to normal throughout the season.  Last year, my driving average finished at 277 total.  If I look at the data now, it is 271 yards with two rounds in the book due to not getting much roll out in the fairways.

 

The Mevo distances are on the range since I don't have a place to hit indoors.  The range that I go to actually has heated stalls outside, which is nice.  Granted, it is only one range session, so I know I need a bigger data set, but we'll see what that does over time.

 

For example, here's a shot from the 1st hole this weekend (used the Taylormade TPx this round).  My carry distances with the 9 iron are typically right at the 145 to 150 yard mark (the one below was into a slight wind).  Let's not talk about the popped up drive into the 10th fairway after coming from the car into 45* weather.

 

 

The 11th hole was playing 5 yards downhill, so that's pretty accurate for my normal carry distance with that club.  Based on the Mevo data, the carry distance was only 165 with my 7 iron, so about 10 yards short of normal on-course experience.

That’s really interesting. Maybe part of this discrepancy towards the top of the bag is  partly due to range balls, which also don’t perform as well as swing speed increases. 
 

This is another wrinkle, but yesterday I got to the range after only using my Mevo on a net all winter, and driver readings were an average twenty yards longer. Indoor data was collected with game balls, too. 

All in all, I think the Mevo performs great for my ability level. I’d imagine a scratch golfer would want more information captured more precisely

That is interesting! 

 

What is the main difference driver between the two data sets?  Is the spin being read higher indoors (I'm assuming you had the metallic dots on the ball) vs. outdoors?  Club head speed the same?  Made sure to select the right Indoor/Outdoor setting?

 

I plan on hitting the range this weekend to get some more data too and see what elevation I need to adjust the Mevo to in order to get to my average carry distances.
