A guy misses a 3ft putt to win, and ends up in a playoff. Do you...

it depends on the player, anyone can miss a 3 footer at any time i suppose. it probably wouldn't change much.

Where it could change how i feel is a situation like Brian Davis several years ago, where he got kind of a BS penalty on the first playoff hole. You kinda want karma to hook him up

Same for Hunter Mahan at Bethpage some years ago, for example when he hit a perfect iron shot on #16 while in the lead and it hit the flag and shot back like 100 feet off the green

ALL 3 footers arent created equal. that one had about 2 foot of break didn't it?  What percentage of the time does a pro make that put?  To win?  I was rooting for him, he deserved the win and did what he had to to make it happen.

I felt bad for him for missing that short putt, even though I was rooting for Finau but I do like Homa. I thought he pulled off very impressive shot to have a decent birdie chance on first playoff hole.

It did not have 2 feet of break, no more than a cup. It looked like he had it lined up pretty straight and it caught a good chunk of the lip

Honestly with the pace he hit it, it probably wasn't even outside the edge.

Max's mental game is really strong, he dealt with missing that 3 footer then drew a pretty horrible lie against the tree. Still managed to drag out the playoff and get it in the end. What's not to like, he's super humble and he's an unreal iron player.

Yeah I think he thought he had enough pace to take the break out and just needed to play a hair of it. Sneaky long off the tee as well with some great shots in the bag. That low fade he hit up the 18th to leave wedge in was absolute money.

Did anyone ever think Finau would actually win? He always seems to find some way to throw it away down the stretch. Unfortunately, this week it just took a few extra holes for that to happen.

I did! He shot 64 in final round...just needed 1 more putt to fall and ran out of luck. Lots of pressure on that par 3 tee shot for sure.

Don't get me wrong I wasn't necessarily rooting against him. All things considered he seems like a really good guy and someone who is easy to cheer for.

He played great on Sunday, but he had multiple chances to close it out at the end and just couldn't get it done which has become commonplace with him. He could have won it on 18 with a birdie and ended up having to make a great par save to get into a playoff. He could have closed it out on the first playoff hole but couldn't convert the relatively straight forward up and down for birdie. Finally, the poor tee shot on the par 3 and failing to get up and down to lose.

I just wonder if all these close calls (all the poor Sunday rounds after having the lead, all the 2nd and 3rd place finishes, and going 0-3 in playoffs since his only win back in 2016) will take a mental toll on him and prevent him from being able to break through win again one day.

From my own standpoint, I would have hated to see Homa lose on that missed putt.  Obviously, it's never just one stroke that loses you a match, but when it's the last one that could win it for you, it leaves a bigger mark.  After he hit that chip on 10 in the playoff, I was definitely pulling for him.  As for the putt he missed, Faldo did say to play it to the right half of the cup, which Homa didn't do, so don't know if it was a misread, or just a bad stroke.

When Lexi Thompson lost a major on a BS penalty that cost her 4 freaking strokes, I thought the girl in the playoff with her should have intentionally duffed a couple to let Lexi win.

It's funny you mention that, i have thought about that in the past. Not to "let someone win" necessarily, but what would the reaction be if the guy playing with Brian Davis 10 years ago or whatever it was, also intentionally took a penalty to return it back to status quo.

Not to give the person an advantage, just to bring it back to whatever setting it was in before the BS penalty

As much as winning a tournament must be awesome, part of you probably would feel badly winning it that way.

I always wondered that because in the Davis case, the other player was on the green in 2 and Davis was in a hazard and wedged out to like 25 feet. The other player could have intentionally taken a penalty and still had the upper hand, as he would have had their been no stupid penalty

I wonder what the reaction would have been. Good sportsmanship or outrage?

Max called in to the latest NLU podcast and said he was super nervous over the putt on 18 and just made a really bad stroke, for whatever that's worth.

They make that putt 90% of the time.  Very little break.  Apologies if I’m missing the sarcasm...

I root the same as I was rooting before.  I wanted Homa to get the win, but Tony winning was good too.  Win-win

Max said he read it right edge and it lipped on the left so about a cup of break with the pace he hit it. Maybe hit it a touch harder through the break as you don't want start it outside the hole from 3 feet if you don't have to.

  • jordan2240 changed the title to A guy misses a 3ft putt to win, and ends up in a playoff. Do you...

In the situation that you're referencing I personally would root for competitive golf after, hopefully the missed 3 footer doesn't lead to a breakdown. I work Sunday night so I never get to see the end of events, but in this case it sounds like it was a good situation all around for my liking. The playoff sounds like it was competitive, the bridesmaid got to be the bride which is a story I like.

True that would would not be popular at all in the gambling community. And any league that makes money off gambling would probably denounce that move as being anti competitive or "not trying to win"
