I will undoubtedly end up with turf but man it would be cool to have real turf.

The green has exceeded all expectations. I'm not easily impressed, but I am truly blown away. I spent some time chipping and pitching tonight and can't believe how responsive the green is. I am using a brand new wedge, but the action I'm getting is as good as any green I've played. Words and pictures don't do it justice so this weekend I'm going to try and make a video. You have to see it to believe it. More to come!

 

As excited as I am by the green, it's still just a "thing." It's a very nice luxury thing, but a thing none the less. What I'm most excited, and proud about, is the 20 year journey it took to get this thing. I think of the sacrifice my wife made staying home and raising our kids while I pursued my career. I think of the countless 80 hour work weeks I invested trying to make something of myself. I look at that green and I'm humbled and grateful, and for me it has nothing to do with putting.

I attempting to upload a few videos so you can see how the green reacts. The vids are chip shots, 30 yard pitch shot, and a few putts. Again, this is so you can see the green, not an open invitation to critique my lack of lack of skill 😀.

I'm curious what kind of maintenance is required for something like this?

limited maintenance beyond occasionally sweeping it with a soft bristle broom. Once a year you use a lawn roller to keep the speed up, and every 3-5 year adding a top coat of sand.

I have putting green in the backyard but it isn’t nearly as receptive on chips.  Great for putting.

anyone know how these greens stand up to weather. Do many install these in places that get snow and ice in winter?

I had the same question - not sure its a complete answer but the Celebrity Greens website has local franchises/installers in places with pretty cold winters - IE upper midwest.

The company I used is named Celebrity Greens. I'm located in AZ and there are several companies that build greens. I was quoted prices from $6-$12 per square foot, and Celebrity was the most expensive. However, I liked their product, and now with my green done, I'm glad I chose them.

My green is approximately 685 square feet with 200 square feet of fringe.

Great post to document the process and finished product of a very nice putting green.  Plus you got a great deal at $12/sq. ft.! I'm in the late stages of approving an install for a 1500 sq ft synthetic putting green in the Pacific Northwest with a frequent competitor to Celebrity Greens. Pricing is quite a bit higher at $20-30/sq. ft., probably due to extra base required for better irrigation with all the wetness and shade. I can't get much of anything to grow in a section of my yard, but still debating about whether to install plain old synthetic grass for more usage/aesthetics or a putting green that could potentially not appeal to future homebuyers when we decide to sell our place in a few years.  

 

I agree with OP comments that its just a very nice "thing" or another feature about the house that took years to achieve. Now that a bit of time has passed since the install, do you find yourself still using it frequently? Any other thoughts on doing it over again?

Great question. I've walked across it several times and the feeling never crossed my mind. As such, I suppose it feels pretty natural.

 

The sand on the green is very compact, and I haven't had any mess. Also, I have six kids and four dogs running across it all day long with wet feet from the pool and no mess to speak of.

Before thinking grass, try to find a high end putting green to practice on. The roll is very nice and speed wise my green stacks up against my local courses very well. The fact that I can step outside and never need to worry about maintenance is a god send too.
