Wow, segmental tibial shaft fracture with compartment syndrome. Wasn’t a pilon fracture if they got an IM nail down it. Hope he didn’t have a talus fx too.

Are you a spine guy?

i only ask cause your language sound knowledgeable and i see the term “alif” on a bunch of back surgery clients. Anterior something internal fixation i think?

Would be really sad if this is how his career ends, I really hope not, hopefully he recovers well and can continue to compete, but most importantly my best wishes go out to my sports hero in this time of need.

Trust me, if he wasn’t driving recklessly or too fast for the conditions, he could avoid the situations you described. The damage to the vehicle is consistent with a car driving too fast.  I’ve worked plenty of wrecks in my life as I own a wrecker service in NC.  The only thing that causes vehicle damage like that is excessive speed.  Kinetic energy = 1/2mv^2

I read he was speeding out of the hotel, almost hit another car while leaving the hotel and was due to give a golf lesson to Drew Brees at 7:30 who was at a course 60 minutes away and Tiger had 30 minutes to get there.  Sounds like speed was definitely a factor in this.

He needed rods, pins, and screws to fix things and bone broke the skin.  Let's hope he makes a full recovery.

You also read, here and maybe elsewhere, that he fractured both femurs and was extracted by the Jaws of Life.

His immediate concerns with an open tib/fib fx were vascular supply and stabilization, hopefully both addressed by now, and infection. I’ve never been a Tiger fan, as documented on other posts here, esp since 2009, but as a doctor, golfer, and human I wish him the best possible recovery.

Good post.

On a separate note it's quite funny that an MD uses the screen name Duct Tape... Patch me up Doc 🙂

So, it sounds like Tiger is going to be okay, steel rod in the leg, multiple fractures.  It will be painful but he more than likely will be walking again in 3 months and be playing golf later in the year assuming there isn’t something else going on we don’t know about, or some Alex Smith type of complications.  At this point his back is still probably a bigger long term concern.

I am speaking as someone who had a similar leg injury, although the bone didn’t break the skin, and who has a chronic creaky back. His leg will never be the same, but it will probably be functional.

https://www.genesis.com/au/en/luxury-suv-genesis-gv80-safety.html  Interesting how many safety features it had. Whether or not they working correctly, who knows.

Oh yeah from my experience as a Volunteer Fireman, wrecker driver and building dirt track stock cars from the pictures I saw the cockpit of the car held up well and none of the panels seemed to bend. What I speculate and at this point it is mere speculation that the motor trans assembly went back some under and posibably deflected the floorboards and thus the leg injuries. But IMHO that Genesis was a solid built car. IMHO again I would say the airbags did their job too

They retracted the jaws of life statement.  They pulled off the windshield to get him out.

I was thinking about Alex Smith and his horrible leg infection.  Hope Tiger doesn't have to deal with that.

 Hope he recovers fully

That is it- I don't care about the accident particulars( no one else was hurt and I am sure he has great medical insurance and the best care possible)

One famous sportsman has a car wreck and it is sad and dominates the news

500,000 Americans die of a preventable virus and it is yesterdays news--that is tragic

I know right!  Sugar kills way more people than that every year for decades and it doesn't get any news coverage.  I'm just glad that Genesis had all the safety features it did.  Sounds like it could have been a lot worse without modern safety technology.

We will probably never know what happened and I hope we don’t ever find out. It is none of our business.

We already know what we need to know. Tiger was in an auto accident. Why people insist on speculation and armchair scene reconstruction and sleuthing baffles me.

Get well, Tiger.

I'm not so concerned with why the accident happened but the aftermath of it.

Personally I don't see Tiger coming back and in a weird way wish he doesn't.

While I consider myself to have witnessed his career I find it hard not to think about his future after having 5 back surgeries and now this accident. As much as I want Tiger to play golf again I want him to have a good happy life more. I now want him to give up competitive golf, and spend his time playing with friends and family and enjoying seeing his children grow up.

He's done enough for golf and the world, now he should focus on himself.

Sadly he might be one of those people that just can't let go and will push his body to try and come back from this also.

If he went immediately into surgery, the police may not have obtained a blood sample.

The doctors are not supposed to release his information (HIPAA).

In addition to possible DUI drugs (prescription meds) and/or DUI drugs/alcoholic beverages it could have been:

  • Driving too fast
  • Looking at a cell phone (distracted driving)
  • An animal ran out in front of him and he overcorrected to avoid it.

Lots of possibilities but DUI drugs seems most likely.

It’s my understanding that Having a license a California automatically gives consent to a blood test. Hippa would prevent the docs from releasing that info to the public but not to the authorities.
Now, I don’t know what state he held a license in , prob CA or FLA I’d guess.

What do you mean "everyone talking drug use has been proven wrong already"

Reported 8 Minutes ago : "Sheriff Alex Villanueva earlier said there was no immediate sign of impairment. No attempt to draw blood from Woods was made at the scene. Villanueva said that his condition and signs of being under the influence of narcotics, alcohol or medicine would be the subject of an investigation.

No surprise because these tests can take days and weeks.

I know I ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I would guess that someone residing in Florida would have a Florida drivers license, since you can't have two.
