New irons purchase advise!!!

Recommended Posts

I currently game a set of 714 Ap2 which have served me well. After scouring the forum and looking at multiple threads I'm after some guidence. I want some new irons...... Curennt HC 10 looking for a little more forgiveness and distance. Eight Iron dictance is about 150 155. So far I like the look of P790 P770 i210 i500 and very attracted to the Srixon range. Also the mizuno 919 or 921 forged seem like a good set up. My miss when playing bad is left, really left of target and with current clubs I just don't get it there at all with miss hits. Any advise on what to purchase or in fact anything I've missed that people suggest looking into would be a great help. First time posting thanks in advance!!

Check out the Sub70 699 or 699 pro range. Both are hollow body irons in the p790 to p770 range. I was fitted into p790 but didn’t want to spend what they wanted me to spend, and I’m very happy with my

I just had a fitting and here are my thoughts.  I have played Mizuno irons for the last 5 years (MP 25, 919 forged, currently MP 20 Mmc).  I hit the 770’s, apex pro 21, zx7, t100, 921 forged to name a

We have a lot in common.  I am about to retire 710 AP2’s as soon as the set I ordered today comes in.  I went into my fitting open minded to try anything he put in my hand.  I too wanted something a little more forgiving and a lil distance wouldn’t hurt. We started w my AP2 7 iron and I was carrying 165-170 w 6500-7000 rpm.  I tried p790, p770, apex pro, x forged CB, t200, and jpx210 (could have the model wrong).  It was close for me w the X forged cb and p790’s... but the ball flight and feel made the x forged bc the clear winner.  I was literally smiling bc of how soft they felt yet still launched.  I was hitting the x forged 7 185-190, even hit a couple closer to 200.  The x forged wasn’t even on my radar but I’m going to be a huge proponent of them going forward.  They offer distance and forgiveness the AP2 doesn’t yet have feel and the look of AP2 at address.  Give em a try and lmk what you think!

I just had a fitting and here are my thoughts.  I have played Mizuno irons for the last 5 years (MP 25, 919 forged, currently MP 20 Mmc).  I hit the 770’s, apex pro 21, zx7, t100, 921 forged to name a few.  I did not like the feel of the 770, apex pro , or the 921 forged.  The Srixon zx7 and t100 performed very similar with similar shaft(kbs $ taper 120).  The fitting was inside so you don’t get the difference in turf interaction and the sole difference in these 2 irons.  My mmc are good but the numbers were better with the zx7 and t100.  Both were not quite as soft as the mmc but still felt soft.  As you know, go get fitted.  Lots of good choices out there.  Good luck!

I loved the T100s irons but a little to demanding for me and I am a 8hc. I switched to regular Apex CF 19 and they were much better on my mishits which can be thin and/or toe. I am still playing around with distance control on these irons but I think I can get it dialed in. It's the toe hits that wow me with these irons, the ball just keeps going. To be fair the shaft in the Apex's is the Elevate 95s and the T100 were stock AMT White so quite a bit different. I found that I really am not that good or consistent and the misses are just better.

I think you might like Apex 21. Good looking at address, more forgiving than the AP2s, VERY high-tech. The issue you may see with going more forgiving is that offset usually increases when you move in that direction, and that could exacerbate your left miss. Just a spec to keep an eye on in your search.

Got hit 'em! As a part-time fitter, I can assure you that no golf shop employee thinks its annoying to ask to try to hit an iron or two and ask some questions. That's how you sell golf clubs. Just don't let it turn into a grind session where the employee is just watching you work out the kinks.

Don’t think I’m knowledgeable enough to advise you one way or the other. My experience from having the P770 (2020 version) for a couple months now is really positive. Yes it’s hallowed body and not going to feel the same as a true forged iron. However I have been really happy with the performance/forgiveness/feel thus far. I would certainly recommend.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
