Seeking Zero Turn Swing Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am looking for advice about a "zero turn" swing.  That's right...arms only.  My mom is in her mid 60's and has some lower back/disc issues.  She cannot bend and rotate at the same time without experiencing a lot of pain.  A traditional golf swing will not work for her.  I was watching her swing the other day, and she is starting to use an arm only swing, which should work enough to let her enjoy the game on the shorter muni's we play.  Problem is that she is flipping at the bottom of the swing and often ends up topping the ball.  Also I can't help but think that because she is driving the club almost entirely with her wrists, that she could pick up some distance with some improved mechanics.

So does anyone here have a link to or know of any resources/drills that would help with an arms only golf swing?  My mom is way too nice a person and loves life too much to be constantly frustrated on the course.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You may want to consider getting her into single length irons, and even bumped up a little more from standard, as a way of changing her relationship to the ground making it more upright overall,  which might make a simple arm swing with minimal turning.   The single length may allow her to use something like this.

GS...thanks for the reply.  I will send that on to her and see what she thinks.

We were at the range the other day and she is finally starting to make contact with the ball and get it up in the air.  She is blocking everything right, but at least she is hitting the ball.

I had thought about getting her into single length irons, cut to 5 or 6 iron length, and still might talk to her about that.

At the same rate, I am sure a lesson or two with someone who knows how to teach a less athletic golf swing would be beneficial as well.

Re previous post, I can't figure out how to post this gif but go to reddit under the topic

Putting tips for right hand, left eye dominant person

and scroll down... it's captioned  hey, it works doesn't it??

Alternately, on YouTube search for

World's Best One Armed Golfers

as well as other 'one-armed swings' videos. I think this would best minimize disc compression.

Either way, if your mom ends up buying another set of irons, with her reduced swing speed she should consider increasing the gaps to 5 degrees or more between clubs and very high lofted woods.

Hope this helps.

Where are you located Cglynn? Reason I ask is there is a PGA Master Prof. in the Raleigh / Durham area who I'm 100% convinced can teach ANYONE how to golf. He has a YouTube channel with monthly videos. I've taken lessons for 20 years and with probably 10 - 15 different instructors, and no one has made the game even close to as simple as Brad Clayton.

Here's the link to just one of his regular video posts as well as a special clip on Golf Channel about a horrible accident he had several years ago (https://www.golfchannel.com/video/story-pga-master-professional-brad-clayton)...I think you'll see he definitely has a different approach....good luck!

Inspiring man, and channel, thank you for the link.  Just starting to review his work and finding many top notch instruction pieces.

Glad to share! He is one of a kind and really puts the game (and life) in perspective. Unlike so many other instructors, he quickly can pick up on how the student learns best, and adapt to effectively teach the game. Seems so many other PGA pro's have "one-style" so to speak.

Thanks for the tips and links.  I will check out Brad Clayton and see if there is anything we can gain from him.

Also, and for what its worth, usually when mom and I play golf together, we are out on the course, enjoying a round.  I try not to give her on the course tips, because that can turn into a tish show in a hurry.  As such, I haven't really watched her actually play a lot.

We got to practicing the other day and I noticed that she was set up with the ball really far forward in her stance, and really close to the ball.  I offered her an alternative setup and low and behold, she isn't topping the ball anymore, nor flat out missing the ball and whiffing.   Slow motion video showed her swing is pretty much on plane and that she is closing the club at impact.  So she's doing the things that need to be done.

We just really need to work on her setup and alignment, and I am willing to bet she plays her best golf since she started playing in '96.
