Clown head mallets

Why do so many people use a big clown headed mallet when you only take the putter back a few inches? Also, why are head weights getting so high? If OEMs think that the average player is so uncoordinated that they need a giant clown head, wouldn’t higher head weight cause worse distance control, since it’s easier to impart more momentum with a heavier club head?

I'm pretty sure that the head weights for mallets aren't much different than they are for blades. It's where the weight in the head is located that makes them more stable.

 

Thus, distance control wouldn't really vary. In fact, it may be better for players who don't hit every put in the center of the face.

 

The term "OEM's think" seems to get tossed around a lot despite their multi-million dollar R&D departments.

 

Finally, you know that you don't have to use a "clown-headed mallet" right? If the look of it bothers you, than stick with your 8802 or whatever. To each his own boss.

The bigger “clown” heads aren’t necessarily all about stability. A big part of the reason people play them is the help with the alignment they can get from them. Having a larger footprint gives the manufacturer more real estate for alignment aids.

I have both a blade and a mallet. Both weigh almost exactly the same....

Many models start off as fairly gimmicky until a few gain traction and wider acceptance.

Why are so many people so concerned with what others play?  Peoples lofts are jacked.  Shafts are too long.  They should be/should not be using blades.  Who cares?  
I totally get preferring a answer/Newport style putter but the fact that you asked this question makes me think you have never really tried something like a spider x with an open mind.  There are pros and cons to blade versus “clown head mallet” putters but anyone who try’s a spider style putter and can’t see why it would appeal to some players is just not paying attention.

I think a lot of design and testing is going on with OEM's and their designs perform well. From a personal level, you have so much choice, so find out what you like and what works for you and have at it.

Putter can't be more than 7" from heel to toe and that honk noise is probably your clown shoes.

Currently in the basement are a 2014 Cameron Select Newport 2 at 370 grams and a Huntington Beach Soft 14 also at 370 grams. I am typically 5-7 fewer putts per round with the HBS14. Perhaps it's alignment and the ability of non perfectly struck putts to finish closer to the hole. You know what's not in many bags around the world???? Calamity Jane.

Unfortunately I remember when these came out. I think a 4 ball Odyssey was in that mix too
