Everyone on tour is a grinder AND naturally talented. Just one won't cut it. And it's not just about putting in the hours, it's about putting in the right hours.

 

Don't think that you could sum up modern pro golf any better than this statement right here. I'd argue that Hogan was the guy that started the trend. Tiger made hard work a doctrine. As for which one, we all want what we ain't got... so naturally talented. You can't teach talent, you can teach work ethic.

Pro or amateur, athletic ability first, then he/she must learn to be a "grinder." 

A grinder at first can raise up but without pure talent and athletic ability - only a few survive.

You said Lietzke's success had less to do with talent and more to do with a "simple swing anyone can replicate."  So if it's easy to replicate the swing, why hasn't anyone else had the type of success playing so little that Lietzke had?

Yes ... and ...

 

There is still a continuum of both talent and work ethic on the tour. Not everyone is equally talented and not everyone works equally hard.
