Sadly I think both they buyer and the seller share the blame on this one.

Buyer - 100% should not have paid with venmo. Should have requested better pictures. Also those "dents" are so tiny that one could argue they are to be expected on any used club.

Seller - should have taken better/more photos. If those dents and scratches were there they should have been in the description at the very least.

Exactly.

Pics should be taken outside. Indoor pics like this do not show the details well.

Buyer shouldn't be surprised to find imperfections like that on a used club. Should have asked for better pics and paid with PayPal.

But yeah, as others said above, I would accept the return if the buyer is truly unhappy.

Seems like crying over spilt milk as those look like minor scratches, but either way, the seller is offering you a refund. I would not refund anyone until I receive the item back either

The refund seems to be contingent upon seller receiving back in condition he sent it. The problem is that they disagree on what that condition was-buyer says he received it with scratches and small dents and seller says those tings didn't exist when he sent it and implies he will not refund as condition is different.

I can see the scratches in your pics OP. I would suspect they buyer upon closer inspection can see them as well. As far as dings/dents , well, your pictures aren't detailed enough to say if they're there or not , but with those scratches not verbalized in the listing , those little dings were possibly there as well.  I would do what's right and refund your buyer just due to not being fully disclosed and the fact of you prompting Venmo info so that he had no recourse if something happened to the shipment or it was actually damaged upon him receiving. This is close dooring the system that generally pans out through PayPal.

I hate to be the voice of common sense here, but it's a used driver and used drivers have scratches. Unless you are turning it into a museum piece, you are going to hit it and add more scratches. I guess I don't see the big deal in keeping it and hitting the hell out of it?

Everyone one has their opinion on what constitutes used.  Typically drivers & fairway woods would have sole scratches, face marks which would show up on pics.  Scratches/dings elsewhere would not be normal with head covers used and should be disclosed imo.

From the original seller pics you could tell there were "swirl marks" in the paint similar to a black car's clear coat.  I couldn't see any small paint chips in the original pics and I can't really see any dents in the buyer's pics either.  If it were me I'd just take some car cleaner wax to the head, touch up the small marks with a sharpie and take a partial refund if the seller was willing to give one and move on.

Have to agree here - while the original pics may not have been "perfect"  don't think the condition the buyer shows comes anywhere near warranting a refund for a used club.

Additionally, I've bought from JLB multiple times and always found his descriptions/pics fairly represented the actuals

I have to agree that just saying it is used doesn't really mean there will be scratches or what have you. I think the lesson here is to take pictures that clearly show the condition of the club from multiple angles and thoroughly examine a club prior to listing it so that you can provide a bit more of a description of any known condition elements such as -

"Has swirling on crown and some light scuffs, scratches, etc. "

Basically be a clear about the condition of the item as possible. Just having a few pics that might or might not represent the true condition can be misleading even if there is no intention to do so.

I would just start a refund process. Sucks but not worth the headache of going back and forth and accusing the buyer of inflicting the damage themselves.

I’m with the buyer on this one.  As a long time eBay seller of my used golf equipment, I can certainly says that full disclosure is key to avoiding this very situation.  Sometimes the clubs I sell have knicks and scratches, and I can definitely angle the club for the pictures to conceal the flaws.  It’s easily done.  Not saying that’s what happen here.   But the moral is take pictures of every flaw and accurately describe them.  If the club had some flaws but weren’t specifically highlighted in the seller’s pictures, then that’s an issue for me.

On the other hand, as a long time buyer of used golf clubs, I can always tell if there’s something off....always be wary of listings with not enough pictures and descriptions.  Unless the club is described as mint or near mint.  But I wouldn’t expect someone who doesn’t frequently buy used golf equipment online to know all these little tricks that can only be learned from experience.  I’ve been a victim of an undisclosed scuff or two a few times.

Yes, this is why I always advocate for taking the two minutes to write out a general description of the condition of the club ("a few light scratches on the crown and toe"). I always do so in my listings because it's fairly hard to take a picture of how a glossy club actually looks in person. Certainly natural light is needed, but even still, sometimes you end up accidentally masking the club's true condition, and sometimes you end up exaggerating the club's defects. A description of how your eye sees the club in person can mitigate these harms.
