PING G425 Shaft Length - Caution

double

Recommended Posts

The stock grips on the PING G425 woods and irons are the Tour Velvet Lite with ARCCOS sensors.  Be aware that if you want to change the grips to something else, the ungripped shafts will be about 3/16" to 1/4" shorter than standard lengths due to the space taken up by the sensors.  If you put on non-ARCCOS grips, your clubs will be shorter than spec lengths.  I learned this the hard way.  I purchased the driver, 3 wood, and 2 hybrids with the intention of replacing the grips only to learn all of them are now shorter than the lengths I had with the G410s because I was unaware of the ARCCOS sensors taking up room at the butt ends.  PING does not explain this on its website, which I personally feel is negligently uninformative.  I contacted PING about this and have had no response.  Perhaps most golfers won't know the difference with their clubs being a 1/4" shorter than standard length, but for me it is a big deal and I wish I had not bought them when I did.

I had the same thing happen with Cobra, or similar because of the Arccos grips.  I order with non arccos grips and the lengths with them are correct.   I am not sure if you order a standard grip if the Ping's would come out correct or if they mass butt-cut their shafts based on arccos length grips.

I slapped a insert into the butt end and cut it to length the first time it happened to me.  Was I a bit miffed, yeah.  I imagine there are people that if they order them and they are longer would be miffed too, but on some spreadsheet somewhere they decided that it was better to have them at length with arccos grips than it was to have them longer with arccos grips.

Golf Galaxy.  I didn't think to order them without the ARCCOS grips because I didn't know about the length issue, or I would have placed an order without buying off the rack.  I lay blame on PING.  I checked out the PING website before buying and saw the specifications listed without any variation based on grips.  I feel PING should indicate the difference in raw shaft length with the different grips.  I'll  go to another brand before I go back to PING clubs.

This is the exact reason why I think all manufacturers should change to using ungripped measurements.  Would eliminate all these issues and give at least one consistent spec across the industry.  Even normal grips have different butt cap thicknesses that can vary up to 1/4”.

PING's club lengths are with the club ungripped, unless they have changed that practice for the Arccos grips.

Not cool, dude.  PING has the BEST customer service in the business hands down.  But instead of actually reaching out to them, you decide to come on here and bash them because they built the clubs to THEIR specs with grips you don't like.  It's pretty common knowledge that Arccos sensors add 1/4" to the playing length of the clubs, or at least it is in these parts of the internet.  Cobra has been using them for several years now.  Things aren't going to change just because PING is using them now, too.  If anything, the blame is on you and maybe the folks at Golf Galaxy.  Did you even think to ask if the grips made a difference?  I fully believe the salesperson had no clue, given that GG is the Wal-Mart of "club fitters".  So, poo-poo on them for not pointing it out as well.  But instead of badmouthing PING, how about you call them and see if they can help you out.  They may have you send the clubs in and swap shafts for you.  That certainly wouldn't be unheard of from a company with such a stellar reputation when it comes to helping out their customers.  Here's a little story for you:  I bought a G25 driver off of ebay a few years ago for $80.  I cracked it.  So, I get a hold of PING.  Guess what they did for me?  They gave me $100 toward the purchase of a G400 Max.  Gee, they sure are awful, aren't they?  $20 more than I paid for the old driver.  CALL THEM!  Rant over.

According to PING (asked them on online chat), the Arccos plugs are included in the club length: "Yes, they are included in the length so I would try to order a little bit longer"

(I ordered without Arccos.)

Okay, so they are making an exception in the case of clubs with Arccos grips. All their other clubs are measured with the grips off.

I was fit by PING at Kierland in Scottsdale.  The fitter did an excellent job and suggested G425 irons at +1/2" length.  Told the fitter I wanted the Golf Pride Z-Cord grip and he made the appropriate notes to my fitting specifications.  Ordered them from my local shop and they came out perfect.

Built in Arccos sensors were not available in the grip I wanted and I don't feel the need to pay the  Arccos subscription fee.

Thanks for this topic. I was expecting an off the shelf driver to be 45.5 without the arccos grip and I’m glad that’s the case.

Absolutely. Same issue. The end of the grip is too flexible also 🤬

This is what I thought also, and based on my experience.

I recently cobbled together a set of G425 irons.  I sent 5 of the clubs to PING to get the loft/lie adjusted to standard.  I also asked to get the shafts measured and to make sure they were standard length, and then re-gripped to WINNs. 2 of the clubs had different grips (Arccos and GP CP2 wrap) and both measured standard.  IF the PING measurement was made with the grip, then there should have been a deviation from the standard length for the club with the GP grip, no?

And yeah...PING customer service is bar-none, the best out there.  At least in the US. 👏
