Hi all,

 

traveling to Cali in a couple weeks. Unfortunately pelican north is closed for maintenance while we’re there. Is the south still worth the price in terms of playability, conditions, views etc. thanks in advance.

Played both 10 years ago.   Both are pleasant courses on the same piece of land, but not particularly memorable.   (‘Views’ are similar for each course.)

Both are def worth playing but expensive. South has some decent views but if you were going to spend the money just for views you could play Trump Nnational LA and save yourself $100.

Would you guys rather play pelican south or oak quarry if prices were the same?

Oak Quarry is a stronger course, from a design point of view.  But PH South is pretty, set close to the coast.

Yes, played both not too long ago - they were in really nice shape.  Are they worth the price of admission?  NO golf course is worth what they charge.  Just bring $$$, good cigars and a flask filled with single malt, and you won't feel the wallet pain or course abuse. 😛 

 

@ryu123 IMO - Oak Q is different, more of a target course.  I use 2 iron off a lot of tees.

If driving/traffic isn't an issue I'd do Oak Quarry. I think it's a more interesting course with better golf, and the signature hole is really unique while Pelican Hill is not too different from any other very nice course with ocean views (which is still fantastic, but the quarry is unlike anything I'd seen before). Oak Quarry is also probably half the price of Pelican.

 

Would highly advise against Trump -- it's a boring, overly penalizing and not very fun course. Zero scrambling -- you either hit the fairway or you drop on nearly every hole. The views are quite great, but it's barely worth the $80-$125 at twilight . . . . $400+ for peak hours is complete insanity. If you're just looking for views I'd opt for Terranea, which is one of the best executive courses in the country.

I live right down the street from Pelican and used to play it a lot before pandemic enabled rack rate pricing 😞   (good for golf industry, bad for middle class SoCal golfers, it's bad here guys!)

 

Both Pelican courses are great.  Usually in great condition, resort golf, awesome views and ambiance.

 

Oak Quarry is a good track, signature hole is memorable, but the conditioning is pretty crappy since the pandemic.  The bunkers are awful.  Pelican should be 2 to 2.5 times the price, I think it's easily worth 2x (it's also not in the boonies like Oak Quarry if you want to do stuff near the coast/beach cities). 

 

I've played Trump around 10x with deals on UnderPar.  It's a place I take visitors because the views are great and the price is right with the vouchers.  Very tough course though, nowhere to bail out on drives, and the greens are very hard to read IMO.  I would maybe pay for those green reading apps if I were to play again.
