Jumbomax grips vs. XXIO X driver

I switched to Jumbomax Jr. grips last summer and I have to say that they work very well.  I ended up with a 76 scoring average for the year despite a very balky putter and I am disinclined to take them off.

However, I picked up a used XXIO X driver as I am 65 and losing distance at a rapid rate.  Hitting it in a simulator suggests that everything I have heard about these clubs is accurate.  More club head speed and very easy to swing.  I like the results.  The grip contains a brass back weight which is an integral design component of their system.  My problem is the grip is WAY too thin.  I contacted XXIO to see if they could sell me a thicker grip and was told that I already had their extra large grip.  I guess that their definition of grip size is different than mine.  Even though I hit this club very straight, the grip feels like I am holding a toothpick.  Having this thin grip on the driver and Jumbomax grips on the rest of my clubs might be a bit too weird for me.  If I replace the XXIO OEM grip with a Jumbomax, am I likely to screw up the feel that makes this club worth playing?  Thoughts?

How heavy is the weight?  I use the tour small jumbomax .  It is about 102 grams so it is sort of a counterweight itself.  So I would just remove the grip and try it.

See this video to remove the grip without losing it.  You don't have to destroy the old grip!

I don't have that exact tool.  I use a metal skewer that I smoothed the end of so it will not puncture the grip.  Go slow, use lots of grip solvent, go slow to let it do its work.

The Jumbomax Ultralights are right at 50 grams which is pretty much the same as Golf Pride grips. Like the post above states try the Tour's. I would think that would put you pretty close to what the XXIO grip would be. I can't imagine it being heavier than that.

The XXIO Grip on the Prime 9 driver is I think 38 grams. I tried it with a 50 gram grip and didn’t like the results. I then put on a Golf Pride Tour 25 and really like the results. Winn also makes a light weight grip too. Finding a jumbo grip that is light might be a problem. The heavy gram grip on this club they say is not a good idea. Try it and see what happens. When installing a grip on these be real careful as you can snap the shaft. These clubs are like fine tuned machines.

I pulled the grip off it and it turns out that the brass weight is inserted in the end of the shaft.  It isn't an integral part of the grip, the way their illustration suggests on their website.  I easily installed a 50 gram Jumbomax Jr. grip and will try it out this afternoon.

I have one as well.  There is a plug at the end of the shaft as you say, but I also think there is one in the butt of the very skinny grip.  I just chopped mine to 44" and wanted to change grips as well, so let me know if you find a solution.

The interesting thing for me... I did a CC fitting last year for my Ping G410 driver and wound up with a 75gram shaft.  Results were good.  I only tried the XXIO X Black for the heck of it.  It has a 47 gram shaft so I thought it would be a disaster.  I got better smash and distance numbers with it.

I played 9 holes yesterday with the XXIO X Black 9.5 with a stock stiff shaft.  It felt great and was very long.  I'm a 65 year old 4 handicap with a 92 mph swing speed.  I feel like this club was made for someone like me.  I'll start searching for a 3 wood if it continues to work this well.

Good to hear!  Are you playing at stock length?  I found the shaft way too long.  Took 2" off.

I have now about 6-7 rounds in with this XXIO Black X driver and I have to say it is one of the easiest clubs to switch I've ever owned.  I am only missing 1-3 fairways a round and I am definitely longer than my Callaway.  I found the XXIO 3 wood on Ebay and after I re-gripped it, I have found it to be the equal of the driver.  Really easy to hit.  Now I am thinking about finding a hybrid!

I own XXIO clubs, 3wood, 4hybrid, 5hybrid, 6hybrid. They have totally changed my game for the better. I’m 74 and dropped my index by 4 strokes in one year. I replaced my M1 TM driver with the 3wood. I replaced my 4 - 6 irons with hybrids and love them. I really want to replace my grips with something heavier, but am afraid to distort the amazing weight balance of these clubs.

thoughts ?

I have been using these badmitten racket grip tapes to thicken my grips. They are very light and last. Feel good in the hands. Softens it a bit.
I tried different brands and liked this the best. They are the longest too for fuller coverage. use them on all my new xxio 12 ‘s.
