Hybrids for someone who liked the Ping G20 hybrid

Recommended Posts

Had a number of years without playing and have been trying a few options at the top end of my bag between 5 iron and 4 wood.

I started playing with blades and generally always leaned towards more traditional looking clubs, preferring irons with limited offset, not too thick of a top line etc.

I have always found it hard to love a hybrid, weirdly apart from the Ping G20. They’re ugly and far from traditional, but for some reason when I was playing previously I loved them and am struggling to find anything else I like.

Not surprisingly it seems no-one makes anything like them now.

Has anyone got any experience of liking and moving on from G20 hybrids?

Thanks for the replies so far.

I did try a big Bertha hybrid thinking it looked somewhat similar, but hated it. Mind you if I was looking at the g20 for the first time I’d hate that too. Don’t think I’ve ever put a hybrid down and liked the way it looks immediately. I think the only reason I like the g20 is from the positive memories I built up by hitting good shots with them.

I liked the g20 because it gapped really well for me at the time. I was able to hit my 3 and 4 iron (i15s at the time) but the g20 gave me almost identical distance with more height and less drop off than irons if I hit it out the heel or toe.

I haven’t tried many more modern hybrids but the ones I have hit have had big front to back dispersion relative to what I used to get with the g20.  They seem to be geared more toward maximising distance.

I may have to persist with something to the point where I’m no longer put off by how it looks, either that or find an old g20!

The Tour Edge Ironwood models look very similar to the g20.

I’m having same trouble with G15 tbh. I swap into 2iron, 4&5 G Crossover weather and course dependant, but bizarrely find it hard to find an alternative that’s aesthetically pleasing! I’m not a massive fairway fan of ‘fairway looking’ hybrids. Plus I spent years with Ping Eye 2 and think the face of these are like a comfort blanket!

I'll also throw the Taylormade GAPR Mid into this mix. It doesn't seem to have quite as long of a face as I remember on G15/G20, but it does have the "tweener" size with an iron-like design and wider sole out toward the toe.

I'm going to assume you're comfortable with the offset but not a FW like head.

Most companies have tried to move away from hybrids with that much offset.   Probably more likely to find that today in a utility iron like a Launcher UHX.

Comfortable yes, although I wouldn’t say I seek out something with offset.

Irons are z745 and they’re the most offset I’ve played or would consider in an iron, so I wouldn’t say I prefer a lot of offset.

I think you’re onto something with not liking the fairway style head. Think I struggle with “how” to play a hybrid and not feeling like I can hit down on a fairway style head.

Even though it’s ugly as sin, I think the g20 is the only hybrid I’ve put down and just automatically been able to play like an iron.

Taylormade GAPR Hi...

Thanks - adding it to the list to take a look at.

So options I want to see if I can get a proper look at now are:

TM GAPR Mid/Hi

Mizuno JPX fli hi

Cleveland UHX

Srixon ZU

Would also like to try a 9 wood if I can find one with a suitable shaft. Love the look of my other half’s epic flash 9 wood.

Tour Edge not easy to find the UK unfortunately

I tend to sweep my hybrids so something that looks a bit like a less deep FW doesn't bother me.   I just don't like it to look too much like a FW.   But if you think iron swing, I can understand preferring a different look.

You'd probably like the 'pro' versions of different hybrids... TSi3, Apex Pro, etc.

Ping had that shape till around the G25 (I had one), then went a more FW looking profile.

Just play the G20. A hybrid is a club you want to hit a precise distance so new tech isn’t more important than sticking with something you know works.

I have a very expensive set of clubs, but a G25 hybrid is still in there because I haven’t hit anything that works better for me.
