AMT White X100 vs. DG X100 120 shaft opinions on Titleist 718 AP2?

Hi everyone,

I recently acquired a really clean set of 718 AP2 wedges with the AMT X100 shaft.  I normally play Mizuno MP20 MMC irons with DG120 x100 shafts.   I bought these, not realizing that they had jumbo grips.  Getting them fully regripped is going to be expensive: I want to get an idea of what to expect before I do so.  I may regrip the 9 iron and 6 iron to compare.

Can anyone tell me the differences between these 2 in terms of feel? I know the specs.  From what I understand, the 6 iron should be about the same weight in both, but the GW-7iron will be heavier in the AMT.  I don't have trouble flighting my 4 iron so I am not sure if lighter weight would be good or not: I can always add weight to the head I suppose.  I have been playing my Mizuno irons with 1 to 2 SW worth of tape, although I really don't notice a difference in performance.  I just like a slower tempo and heavier clubs help me do that; they are D4.

Also, I am wondering why Titleist chose these as the stock shaft: do they have heads that are optimized for AMT shafts?  I am not sure Mizuno even offers this option.  It seems as if most of the T irons and the 718 irons come with this option.

given that I find the Mizuno to be a great head, I will probably like the 718 AP2 as well.  I hit a T100 with the AMT shaft in a 6-iron recently (guy next to me was chatting with me and loaned me his club) and boy it felt nice.  Really nice center strikes, carry 180, lots of height.  I don't know how much "worse" the 718 is, but it got me thinking about going this direction.  I know the T100 and 718 aren't much different.

  • RoyalMustang changed the title to AMT White X100 vs. DG X100 120 shaft opinions on Titleist 718 AP2?

I can confirm that they feel identical in the 6-7 irons. Titleist probably went the AMT route to maximize playability for the masses - lighter weight in the long irons being the key. I doubt there’s anything more to it. Replacing the jumbo grips with standard weight will probably restore the feel you are used to but it depends on whether the previous owner did anything to manipulate swing weight. Switching a couple to start is a good idea.

Re-gripping can be cheap if you do it yourself and buy cheaper grips - Star Grip and Royal Grip make high quality grips in the $4-7 range. Tape, solvent, and hook blades are inexpensive. Fun zen-like task with immediate payoff.

Cool! I probably need to order some supplies, a vice, and a clamp. That is all I need, right? I have my wife's hair dryer if necessary

the irons look stock and swing weight is about 4 points less than a comparable DG120 X100 Mizuno with standard grip. I can hit a midsize but the jumbo might take some getting used to

Well, frugal folks like yours truly would argue that even those parts are optional. I do recommend actual grip solvent as I’ve had a hard time with alternatives. I’m sure there are threads devoted to re-gripping at home but the bare minimum you need is a blade (old grip removal), patience (for removing old tape), new double sided tape, solvent, and new grip. If you’ve got good counter space and strong hands, that should be all you need. I use a paint tray under the shaft to capture excess solvent.

Cool!  I hate taking old tape off however: it was always a bear after I had glued tubulars for my race bike and had to pull them yearly.  Sometimes the tape would pull off of the tire and stay on the rim, or worst case, melt under heavy braking and become one with solvent.  I think I spent 3 hours cleaning a rim once (can't use paint thinner as it may break down the resin holding carbon fiber together).

other than that, it should be fun!

AMT X100 in the mid-irons will feel very similar to DG120 X100 mid-irons.  However, long irons will feel different and short irons may feel tighter, least that's how I experience my ascending shafts, only they are 2g.

My Tensei AV White "S" shafts are 2g ascending, 90g in my 2i to 108g in 9, PW and Gap.   Ascending shafts are similar to Flighted shafts, only they manipulated shaft design and 2g ascending weight as opposed to moving the bend location in Flighted shaft sets.  I am still getting accustom to my shafts.  The other day, benign conditions when I go after my 2i been getting it out there as much as 240yds, 3i 225yds, and I am 70yrs old.  Not getting that same result with 7-GW, as they are more about control or shot making.  I came from PX 6.0 and found hitting PW is like throwing a dart.  It's easier to flight mid-long irons to cover different distances.

Yeah, my GW is S400 and I like that heavier feel, which is why I thought that perhaps the AMT would be a good solution, at least on the heavier end. I have no trouble with the weights in my long irons: I actually took my 3 hybrid up to D6 as it felt light.  For me, a good solution would probably be AMT GW-6 iron, then hard stepped for 5 and 4 iron, but I am not going to pay for a custom club build that really wouldn't change the clubs that much.  I tried hitting a Titleist 3-iron hybrid type of iron (T-MB?) with a 105g shaft and it was way too light.  Not sure the SW but I didn't like it. My swing is all about tempo and being smooth and controlled by timing and linking everything up.

A good offering in the future may be a mini-AMT; the S400/X100 weight in wedges through 8, down to the DG120 X100 weight in the 4/5.

Remember, regardless of actual shaft weight, it's possible to have your clubs feel heavier through swing weight adjustment.  That's the only way I could play my current 90g-108g graphite shafts.  Good luck

So has anyone actually hit these shafts side by side? What is the real world difference in ball flight and feel?

AMT X100

120 X100

X100

I actually two of the three shafts in my Titleist T100 irons.  Purchased the irons on BST and came with the stock AMT S300.  A bit about me:  Typically game DG TI X100 soft stepped once.  Driver SS = 105-108, 6 iron distance (average carry) = 183-185.  Here is my take on the shafts:

AMT S300 -  I tried the AMT S300 thinking maybe S300 could be better for me.  Unfortunately, I just could not get along with the AMT shaft weights.  While the shorter irons were similar good, I just could not get a good tempo with the long irons.  The long irons just felt "too light" and my shot dispersion was all over the place.  I had a mid/high ball flight with above average spin numbers (for me).  Distance was shorter than normal.

I re-shaft with DG TI X100 (soft stepped once) - much better tempo with the irons.  Distance was "normal" for me and but I felt I have to swing "harder".  It could be due to the fact that I used the AMT for 2 months.  Might have altered my swing for the AMT shafts, therefore the feeling that I had to swing "harder" with the X100.  But I had a penetrating lower ball flight, normal spin numbers and much better dispersion.  Distance was "normal", but I had to work at it.

Then, like all WRXers, I re-shafted with DG 120 X100 - tempo was similar to DG TI X100.   Was looking for something lighter because, as I mentioned above, the X100 made me feel like I had to swing "harder".  While I liked the 120 X100, I noticed several things - ball flight was higher, spin was higher and less penetration.  I actually had a difficult time flighting the ball down in the wind.  Dispersion was better than the AMT but not as good as the DG TI X100.  Distance appeared to be once club less than normal.

And to throw a wrench in all of this, I picked of a set of Srixion X7 irons with KBS Tour 130 X -  very smooth, penetrating ball flight that was low/mid (more mid), with great stopping power.  This shaft is the same weight as the DG TI X100 and I did not feel like I had to swing harder than normal.  Distance was normal to 1/2 club longer - ***however the X7 irons are stronger lofts***.

In conclusion:

AMT S300 - too light, poor dispersion and distance for my swing.  I don't think it would have made a difference if they were X100.

DG 120 X100 - maybe a tad too light, high ball flight, high spin numbers, decent dispersion, poor distance.

DG TI X100 (soft steeped) - All around good for me, penetrating ball flight (low-mid), good spin numbers, great dispersion.

KBS Tour 130 X - similar if not the same as the DG TI X100.

I'm more likely going to re-shaft the T100 with the DG TI X100.  I think the change from the AMT to the DG TI X100 was drastic and I needed to give myself more time to acclimate to the shaft weight change.  My assumption is because I played well with the weight of the KBS shaft, I should have a similar tempo with the DG TI X100.  Then it would be a decision on T100 or X7 and then KBS or DG.

But for my swing/tempo, more weight seems to be better.

*And to throw as wrench into the scenario, I  have set of Modus 125 X show up last week.

Hope this helped.

I played DGX100 for over a decade, followed by AMT X100 and currently 120 X100.  The 120's are similar in stiffness to the AMT's in the short irons and get progressively stiffer than the AMT as you move through the mid and long irons.  Standard DG is slightly stiffer than the 120's, consistently from club to club.  The increase in stiffness is in the handle.  120 plays very similar to the standard DG, with the obvious difference being the weight.  The AMT, while not a flighted set per se, performs that way.  I noticed a real difference in flight and weight as I move through the set.  Both the AMT and the 120 will give you more height in the mid and long irons, more so with the AMT.  The AMT has more 'kick' in the long irons.  If you like the consistent, constant weight feel and don't mid the lighter weight in the short irons in particular, I'd favor the 120's.  If you prefer the heavy weight in the short irons but need more height as you get to the longer clubs, it's AMT. I prefer the constant weight feel and flex through the set of the 120's and the 120g weight shafts in the short irons doesn't bother me at all.  The AMT's are a close 2nd choice though.

This is great information. I currently pay tour issue X100s 4-pw and I have an AMT X100 in my 3 iron. I like how easy the AMT X100 is to swing but it can get a little loose (I swing my 3iron 105mph). I also have days where the normal tour issue X100s feel heavy and hard work to swing so I was thinking 120 X100s might be a good compromise across the entire set 3-pw.

great info, thanks!  FWIW, with the jumbo grips, I noticed the same on my AMT X100 long irons.  Lighter: I don't know if it is better as being too quick is my kryptonite.  I love my DG 120 X100 but could go heavier in the short irons.  I wasn't fit for my clubs but the guy at PGATSS (obviously who doesn't know much) said: how can you swing those? They are really heavy shafts!"   I suppose they don't sell many X100 or S400 shafts with that attitude.

I still think a blended set of X100 and DG120 X100 would be sweet

Maybe hard stepping the 120 x100 would knock off enough spin to bring them closer to regular x100?

I was thinking the same thing!  It felt like the DG 120 X100 played more like a stiff plus than a x-stiff shaft.  While I do normally soft step my DG TI X100 shafts, it's more for feel and fine tuning and I don't notice a real change flex.  I wish there was a guide with CPM measurements for the DG shafts.  This way we could all know the true "flex" of each shaft (since there are no standards).

I think I'm going to try the Modus 125 X in the T100 irons.  If memory serves me correct, the 125 is suppose to have a similar profile to the X100.  If this is truly the case, then the Modus should be 5 grams lighter and might be the meal ticket.

But I am going to play another round with the ZX7 irons with the KBS Tour 130 X shafts this week.  If that round goes the way the last round went, the ZX7 / KBS might be sticking around and you all might see the T100 on BST thread!

I was jonesing for a set of the ne Srixon X7's and they were out of stock everywhere.

Luckily someone on WRX had a set 5-PW mew in the wrappers still he needed to sell.  They have AMT white X100's in them.  About me.....117 or so with the driver, I swing softer with the irons in general as they are control clubs rather than distance clubs.  I played KBS Tour V, Rifle 6.5 and Recoil 110 all without issue.  Never really played much in the dynamic gold range.

I have 45 holes in with them.  I have noticed a couple of things......

1. I normally play weird lengths, and in adapting these a bit before installing my recoils in them I played around with lead tape.  I have a few strips on the 5 iron and a couple on the 6 iron.  7 iron down I have been fine with.

2. Dispersion - they are a bit off for me, I really think most of it is that I want to do some tinkering.  I imagine they would be exactly what I want if I normally played with the dynamic gold.

I would recommend everyone try playing around with some lead tape if the longer irons aren't something you are jiving with right off the bat.  Not just on the head, but possibly on the shaft as well.

I have a Modus 125 X shaft I purchased a few years ago to test out in a 7 iron due to the same reputation of being very DG like. Good option. I've been wanting to try out the DG 120, but might have to glue a head on that modus shaft and give it a go. I don't remember how it played

OT, but I noticed in your signature that you play the HZRDUS Yellow in your driver. What other shafts do you get along with in driver? Not to derail the thread hopefully. Just ordered the G425 Max with the Orange. Looking to get a couple of other shafts to test out with it and I have a yellow already. If you don't mind shooting me a PM, I would be greatful

I was recently looking at the Modus 125 specs and noticed that it's actual weight is 129.5g.  So basically no weight difference vs DG

IN the Driver I have been mainly a UST guy, playing the Earth and some others from them. So obviously I got along with the Tour Ping shafts since they are the Chrome UST shaft.  I recently dicovered that the Ventus Velocore in red tipped roughly 1" works very well for me too.   I have one on the way that I will tip and try in my 400 Max and 410 LST both.

You're absolutely correct!  I actually think I knew that, however, my stupid little brain was confused!  Besides the Modus name of "125" which probably confused me, I was thinking about the Project X 6.5 which weights in at 125g.

Regardless, thank you for bring it to my attention.  I have a set of Modus 125 S shafted with my Nike Vapor Pro Combos (back up set) and I like them a lot, but X flex might be best.  I will say that the Modus shaft is really smooth.. could be another reason why I forgot about the weight.

Looking forward to giving the Modus 125 X a go in the T100.

Since this is where the thread is going, I would put down my perception of the DG 100X 120g shaft compared to others in the same iron. I agree, these aren't full-on XXX stiff shafts

1) PX 6.0: these are pretty similar.  Tip in DG120 is a little stiffer perhaps. It launches higher.  Maybe a touch softer overall. If the PX 6.0 is a Stiff+, the DG120 is a Stiff ++

2) C-taper 125 S+: nice shaft, just feels really different than the DG120.  Transfers energy well, feels powerful

3) PX 6.0 LZ: much softer and higher launching than the DG120 100X.

4) Aside from weight, I actually felt that the $ taper 130x was pretty similar to the DG120 X100

On my experimental build list is a set of AMT shafts for 6-PW and then 4-5 in DG120.

I know this is an old thread, but did you end up doing this? I have the Mizuno 223s with the DG120 but I think I might like a bit more weight in the short irons. Trying to see if anyone out there has done this combo AMT/120 shaft set. Thanks!

No, I didn’t. Shortly after this I switched to graphite because my elbow tendinitis wasn’t getting better. That fixed it so I sold all my steel shafts and won’t go back to steel!

Thanks for the quick reply - and congrats on curing the tendinitis!

Bringing this thread back again....which graphite shafts did you go with? I'm a fellow X100 user, and can't find a graphite shaft that I like to replace the X100s. I've developed elbow issues as well. Thanks

I don't know either. I tried a couple of X 120-130g graphite shafts. They all felt like rubber to me.

I recently switched to dg TI x100 120s from the standard TI x100. I must say imo they perform pretty similar feel the same for the most part no loss or gain of distance and definitely nicer on the elbows. Although oddly I actually find it harder to elevate the long irons compared to the true x100s which to me is odd. Overall pleased however
