Best current or recent 3 wood to use as a mini driver (without being an actual mini driver)?

Recommended Posts

Why not consider a driver cut down to like 43" ?

Are you looking for a smaller head?

RBZ tour

Cobra LTD

The cobra and Sim are like 8 yards behind driver distance. Stupid long and low spin.

What are you looking for? A bigger headed 3 wood? Or just a 3 wood that could play to a "driver-like" loft?

Cobra's tour fairways , some of them played down to like 11 degrees. I believe the F9 tour for example did so i imagine the new ones do. However these are smallish heads. Any other 13 degree pro style head that is adjustable you can usually get down to at least 12 degrees so these would mostly work

If you are looking for bigger heads, i don't know that space as well, i tend to use smaller 3 woods as my ballstriking is immaculate

Now you got me looking at mini drivers. The Taylormade One uses the same shaft adapter as my R1/M3. Hmmm.

I love my SIM Ti.  I'm really picky with my 3 metal and the last dialed in one was the tour issue Cally razr hawk 15* w/RIP gamma.  I'm getting 165 ball speed on average with my SIM Ti on trackman.  Highly recommended.

The SIM Ti was the longest I've ever hit a 3 wood. It went too far for me.

TEE EXS 220 13.5* is a rocket launcher.

Don‘t know about the new C721, but in general, Tour Edge makes some of the best sounding and longest fairway woods.

Sim Ti, adjustable hosel  sleeve can be dialed up or down to accommodate your desired flight. Long and versatile. I use it on tight tree-lined courses.

Everyday gamer, is the EXS Pro 3 wood,

although ot has a fixed hosel , its a low spin

long distance 3 wood.

Another vote for the SIM Ti Rocket.  It was way too close to my driver numbers for me to put in the bag so I went with the standard SIM Ti at 15*.

If you're truly looking for a club to use off the tee 95% of the time I'd take a super hard look at the TM Original One in 11.5*.  I picked one up a while back to tinker with and I was floored at how good that thing is.  Despite the shorter shaft and smaller head shape I was close if not slightly past my buddy's tee shots with their drivers.  I actually ended up taking the Diamana LTD shaft and throwing it into my SIM and that's my everyday gamer.  A slightly bigger head on the Original One will give you a tad more forgiveness off the tee vs a 3 wood.  Downside is it's not the best club to hit from the fairway, so if you're looking for that versatility then I'd steer you toward the SIM Ti Rocket.

You really are going to be hard pressed to find something that can truly beat the Sim Ti.  Even though I've owned both 14* and 15* heads, it just created too much gapping issues and have thus gone in another direction to solve this a bit without going up in loft.  Though I am interested in trying the Sim 5wd out as I think that could be perfect.

I'd say whichever you hit well; almost all 3woods can be "mini drivers," its just about your strike. Me personally, TaylorMade, fairway woods have worked best for my swing. I think they are a tad upright compared to other vendors which fits me; I can put my 3wood pretty close out there to driver distance when i stripe it.

I switch between an old 07 Burner 3W and an M2.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

I am a big fan of the Mizuno ST190, ST200 and new STZ.

I had a TM 16* SLDR min-driver in the bag for years and its fantastic...the Mizuno's with the deep face and as long and forgiving as anything out there, is the only thing that I felt was as good off the tee as the Mini Driver.

I would see if you could find one of those heads with shaft that works for you.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
