Fixes for early extension (two-way miss)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have noticed a lot of better players around here struggle with early extension and I'm definitely in the same boat. I'm a 34 year old former competitive junior player who — after barely playing in my 20s — is finally able to practice and play regularly. I am down to a 0.3 handicap, but have struggled with a flip release with my club getting too far inside. When my timing is on I can get it around well enough to play to scratch but my game doesn't travel and I feel like I'm always on the razors edge of a snap hook or mega  right-of-right block. I've ingrained a goat-hump at impact that is costing me consistency and I'm looking for any thoughts/feels/drills to get me into something more stable and less timing specific. I posted two videos below to give you a sense of what's going on. No sacred cows! Be brutal! I need help!

Nice.  Shaft is just too vertical in early downswing.  You have to ee to level it out.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

That video that @GQ0208 posted is brilliant and you're right there's good stuff in that thread. @MonteScheinblum, great call on shaft getting too steep, the EE save has become my "move" and that dog won't hunt.

I have the same issue I fight.  I do something different than ee.  I lock out the right knee and reverse pressure back to right heel.....that’s worse....lol

For what it's worth, you release isn't really flippy. It's more crossover than flippy, but at impact it looks pretty solid. There's a hell of a lot of room between your hands and your torso as you roll it, but you make it work.

It's interesting that your setup looks pretty good until you're about to take the club back and then you push your butt back and sit into your heels more. If you could stay more upright you'd have a better chance of not EE.

Thanks @TheDeanAbides I hadn't noticed that move back until you pointed it out. Makes sense that if I am getting too deep before the takeaway starts, then I'll have nowhere to go. I'll try to standup and keep the weight over the balls of my feet throughout.

That's it exactly. You need somewhere to go.

I came across this this thread the other day and it helped me so much with this problem. Some great videos to help you think about things.

I know the  butt sticking out thing had gotten out of control with people at set up.  I think a lot of it has to do with the whole straight line back thing that started, etc.  But, I didn't realize that a relatively easy fix to this was bending at the ankles more.  That set up issue was completely new to me and you can really see on multiple pros how their shins are at a tiny angle to the ground, not almost basically vertical like in this am they are showing.

That was my takeaway from that video as well. I'd never seen that comparison before and it makes so much sense.
