Anyone else own blades even though you’re “not good enough” to play them?

Not good enough for this blade, but that doesn't stop me from revisiting the pureness once in a while (range only.. wuss).  TBH I'd probably have a blast playing with blades thinking I'm awesome 🤑, and have a blast playing G425s thinking of all the help I have down there.

12.5 handicap.  710 MB’s.  Like others have said, I don’t notice much difference in scoring compared to my other more forgiving cavity backs.  If I’m playing bad, I’m playing bad no matter what clubs I’m using.

Same with me.

In the past I've played MP33's and MP32's just to see what all the fuss was about and really playing blades made no difference to my scores either. I also have the MP58's and to me the MP32 was just as forgiving as the 58's.

Sold the blades but wish I'd kept the MP32's just to throw in the back for fun every now and then.

I disagree. Forgiveness is not overrated but the forgiveness of cavity backs over blades is certainly overstated

Yes and no!

When I bought my first set of blades I was playing off a reasonably high handicap (13), playing a set of blades gave me a greater love for the game, I wanted to play more, I wanted to practice more, the game became more rewarding, and because of this helped reduce my handicap.

I have played player cavity backs and blades and found no difference in my scoring but I always got more out of my rounds playing a set of blades

Have several sets and think I’m at least good enough to play 8-PW (sometimes the 7i too) for casual rounds or at the range. Have Miura Small Blades, TN-87, MP 4/5/37/68, Z945, MR-23.

I used to own blades, the Titleist 710 MB's........moved to the CB's and it was like night and day on mishits.......if you dont strike the ball center face each time, you get severly penalized......by moving to the CB's, my game was never better. It was amazing  how different the two clubs were for me.....looks wise, nothing beats a blade.....but how silly does a player look when he is skulling the ball all over the course but happy he has a nice looking club?

I have 2 sets -

Nike VR Pro, new in plastic. I think my Christmas gift to myself this year is going to be to reshaft these and put some fancy ferrules on them and have them for a sunday bag.

Callaway x-proto, well worn. I used these for years as part of a combo set with the X-forged. Been toying with having them refinished, but haven't ever gotten around to it.

I think the difference between a modern MB and a players CB design these days are very minimal - especially in the short irons.

I play the MP-18's and I don't find them much more/less forgiving than the JPX Tour line.

I guess I won't ever understand this concept. But I also drive my Corvette in the rain, so maybe I'm "that guy". 🤣

I worked harder than I should have to put together my VR Pro Combo set (lefty is getting tougher to find), but they are pure players. The 4 iron was new in plastic and I couldn't wait to smack balls with it.

I bought them on a whim when that company in Dallas had a bunch of brand new lefty sets. $450 new in plastic.

But the shafts aren’t right for me, they aren’t my specs, and I don’t like the stock grips. So I need a complete rebuild to put them in play and I haven’t made an effort.

It was always a vanity purchase I just haven’t gotten around to finishing them yet.

think of it like someone who buys an old car and then plans to slowly fix it up and then drive it on the weekends.

I like tinkering and I love classic blades. So pretty much always have 3-4 ish sets lying around and they aren’t all gonna be full time gamers.

I can appreciate that. For me the joy comes from playing, like the joy I get from driving.

My neighbor has a '96 LT4 Corvette with 32k miles on it. He drives it maybe once a year. I drive my '01 every chance I get. Yes, it's pretty to look at, but until you pull a few 1g corners, you are kinda missing the point.

Fixing up old cars is awesome. But I'm the type that drives the wheels off when I'm done, too.

I certainly do as well. I have a set of Staff FG62's that I bring out for fun every once in a while. My scores don't really change much to be honest, but I do feel more confident with my normal Pings. But once in a while, just for some fun, I bring out the knives.

The specifics about the club (VCOG height, sole design, etc.) have more relationship to "forgiveness" than the category the iron fits in.   Many "blades" these days have low COG and modern sole designs with a decent amount of bounce and camber, so are actually fairly forgiving, and probably as forgiving as many "players" cavity backs.
