When talking about the generalization of ball position, there are really two tactics:

-Moving the ball position based on the club. The ball moves up or back in the stance depending on the club, while the stance stays the same.

or

-Keeping the ball in the same position for every club. The ball stays in the same spot every time, but the width of the stance narrows or widens depending on the club.

How do you position the ball and why?

In general for a novice golfer, playing off the lead shoulder and varying stance width has shown to have a bit more success.  Easier to find the "bottom" of the swing.  Obviously not the right answer for everyone.

Personally, I do a little of both depending on shop shape.  A standard 7 iron down the middle, I would place the ball a bit forward of middle with shoulder width stance.  But a cut 7 iron (for me) I will put the ball off the lead heel.  Think stock Adam Scott vs Alex Noren cut.  Its a bit more complex but I don't think having a single ball position or a moving ball position is that simple.  A lot more goes into making that white ball dance (in my opinion).

I never adjust ball position for a club's #, only flight desired.    Regular adjustments closely follow radial ball positioning, something  Blacklock speaks about but has been around for a while, by working in an arc around ball.   There is an optical illusion between player view and camera view when working around the ball correctly, say for a draw- what appears to a camera view  as moving closer to the right foot but is actually in the same place it started, off the left breast.

It's a game of circles, not lines.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
