TPC Potomac Membership

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am interested in membership at TPC Potomac, but wanted to get some input on the membership and personality of the club first before diving in. I am a mid-30s old male, and I hover around scratch at the moment (between +2 and 2 index, depending on where and what I am playing). I am currently a member at a daily-fee public golf course, and am possibly interested in moving over to TPC if the fit is right. I have contacted the membership director about the young professional membership, and the cost does seem doable, but knowing nothing about the membership is giving me pause. I have played the course a handful of times and I love it (albeit very difficult, but would definitely help my game become stronger). A few questions:

1.  What is the membership like? Is it more the "country club" vibe or more of a "golfers" club?

2. Is there a weekend game or group of guys who play in some sort of competitive group? Our current club has a game on weekends, all handicap ranges, but it really isn't great. The gimmies are a little lax depending on the person and I've even caught a guy dropping a ball after losing one in the woods (I am not anal with the rules, but you can't be flat out cheating). We play for $20/head, so it isn't a lot of money, but enough to rub you the wrong way. Another guy tried starting a game with only better players and no handicap strokes, but it really hasn't gotten off the ground very well.

3. Is there anything I should watch out for before joining? Any hidden costs or fees, lotteries for tee times, difficulty getting on, course conditioning, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

DJ

Its a very nice golf course. A bit tricky in spots but that offers a challenge.  Every time I've been there conditions were very good.  I'd also call it a private golf course and not a country club as its golf only. So if you like tennis, swimming, gym its not there.  The one "Passport" feature that the TPC courses have is ability to play all other TPC courses - worthwhile if you travel a lot.  A fellow I did business with belonged to a TPC in Florida and when he came up to DC he'd take me out.  Since I only go there as a guest I'm not familiar with any leagues, or normal group games.

I am curious what you find out.  I was playing a local MoCo muni with someone who knows a member at Potomac and he said that during COVID it has been hard to get tee times.

One things for sure - the golfers aren't staying indoors.  This past year I've never seen courses so crowded (public or private).

No kidding - I play the MoCo County courses and I was talking to a pro who said that they can fill every single tee time slot available.  Part of it of course is also the spacing - down to 10-12 minute gaps rather than 8 minutes pre-COVID.

I’m a member at another TPC club and the best perk I’ve found is the TPC Passport membership.  Through my membership, I pay cart fees only at the private TPC courses and get 20% off at TPC resorts.  They book the tee times for you, and if you request the tee time before the date opens on the tee sheet they will book as soon as it opens.  I’ve got tee times for the Stadium and Dye’s Valley at Sawgrass coming up that were booked by Passport reservations.

Florida Gator - opening an older thread but am interested in your take on the TPC Passport program since it has been a year since your last info post.  I am looking at possibly joining a TPC course in the MidWest, but spend a decent amount of time on the West Coast of FL and the Passport program for the 2 TPC courses in Tampa and Sarasota have me interested.  Would you still recommend this program?  I am a little torn between 2 clubs right now and the Passport program might be the deciding factor.  Thanks in advance!!  Cheers!

I have a friend who uses the passport. TPC Passport is great for the private courses. For the public resorts he said it's not as good a deal and that the stay and play golf packages at the resorts are usually a better price than booking a room, using your passport discount and playing, but if you aren't staying at the resort it at least gives you access.

The program is good for two rounds per month at each location for cart fee at the private TPC clubs and discounts at the resort TPC clubs like Sawgrass.

For what its worth, I played TPC Boston for $35, TPC River Highlands the next day for $39 then TPC Jasna Polana for $40 the following day.  I don’t even live near one, but I keep my membership for access when I want to play these courses among others I can get on with my membership.

For me, that’s huge.  I stay for free on Marriott points when I travel, no need to pay for a room as well.

Gator, if Im understanding you correctly, you keep a full golf membership at a course you dont live near so you have access to the passport and private TPC Clubs?  Or can you get the passport without being a member at one of the Private TPC courses?
