"At Golf Channel, women say, sexism fuels a ‘boys club’ culture"

Recommended Posts

I am so tired of fragile woman looking at every word or action by men as an assault on their self-esteem.  IMO - the bigger problem has more to do with their self-esteem and self-image, than men abusing them and holding them back.  Then there's the bias and history of "Strauss," and the Post, Politico Magazine and the New York Times, yuck....

Really? The golf channel? You don't say?

A bunch of affluent, overweight, middle aged men? Sexist?

Mind blown.

Oh wait, Holly Saunders. Now it all makes sense.

The article speaks to a long-standing culture that seemed to exist within the GC building. It can't be glossed over. NBC is probably glad the Orlando operation is no more.

I found this a bit of a puzzler:

Chelsea Kite, who worked in live production from 2007 to 2019, said being a woman at Golf Channel made it hard to even know how she was performing. She said John Winch, a technical manager for live tournaments, told her that he couldn’t speak to her directly about her job performance because, as he put it, “Women and people of color rule the world. We live in an HR world.”

“Because of the way the world was changing, he was afraid to talk to women and Black people at work,” Kite said.

Winch, in an interview, said he regretted the way he handled the situation but believed Kite was looking for a reason to report him to HR after the two had a series of conflicts at work. “I have learned that speaking my truth is not always the truth, and not all people want to hear that,” he said.

Winch was fired after Kite reported the incident to human resources, he confirmed. Soon afterward, Kite was fired, too, for what Hughes said were unrelated performance issues. She said she was told the reason was a lack of commitment to her job, despite positive performance reviews.

Talk about a lose-lose situation...

I listened to the NLU podcast episode she was on, and it didn't seem to really have any valid points. It just seemed she was kind of mad about the break up with the Golf Channel.  She admits on the podcast she messed up some stuff in terms of announcing (from what I remember). Could the GC have handled it better, yes, but from what I remember, it wasn't really illegal or crossed a line outside of getting yelled at.

For what its worth, I thought about how her arguments would have sounded if they were coming from say Rich Lerner, would be a non issue. However, if she thinks she was mistreated, than good on her for trying to fight it. We'll see how it goes.

I will not comment on the comments that are coming from a position of male privilege, because they have a right to their opinion. However regarding Dr Seuss books, they were not banned. Dr Seuss Enterprises (a company created to preserve the legacy of Dr Seuss) CHOSE to stop printing six books that portrayed certain races in a negative manner. That’s not opinion, that’s fact.

After complaints from the "woke" crowd. Your statement lack's context.

I thought the same - her boss yelled at her not performing up to standards, then again for defying a direct order. She was upset at being told to go home after intentionally defying her supervisor?  The real world hit her fast I guess, welcome to every work environment outside of utopia.

And her comment about “a trained monkey could do it’ Who says that at work?”  I’d estimate I’ve heard the phrase maybe 1,000 times at work. She obviously has never held an actual job and it shows in her privileged attitude.

I suspect Cromwell and the others probably were witness to some things that were inappropriate from male bosses and colleagues. I don't know if this is the case but I have also seen many people that absolutely cannot take any form of criticism and I mean women and men. Is this the case, who knows?

Here's a bit more context, then:

ap news

And to quote from the article:

The decision to cease publication and sales of the books was made last year after months of discussion, the company, which was founded by Seuss’ family, told AP.

“Dr. Seuss Enterprises listened and took feedback from our audiences including teachers, academics and specialists in the field as part of our review process. We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, to review our catalog of titles,” it said.

The article mentions a few of the aspects that have been deemed offensive in the books the company has decided to pull. Basically, they probably don't want their brand associated with certain old stereotypes anymore.

Interestingly, it also mentions that "The Cat in the Hat" has also received complaints. Hopefully these were for the cat's sartorial choices, as a striped top hat is a bad look for any feline.

Oh my, I am not even sure if I want to start on this, never mind where I should start with all of it.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the Cornwell situation, the working environment at Golf Channel does seem quite frankly bizarre. I mean the "wall" that is mentioned in story, I would consider myself no snowflake but come on, is that something that people would want at work?

On Cornwall, given that I am in the UK, I have had no real experience of her broadcasting beyond fleeting moments here and there. I never formed an opinion on her, positive or negative. Didn't seem to me that she was an integral part of their broadcasts although, I am aware that given her credentials in the game, she might have felt more deserving of a slot that some of her peers although I have no idea if her presenting skills were on par with her peers.
