How to find the correct set-up every single time

Recommended Posts

lots of different ways to build a good set-up.

i use a variation of mike austin's set-up (0s-49s of below video).

i think the most important part of building a good set-up is to be deliberate about it and to do exactly the same thing every single time... until you find a reason to change something. and then you keep doing that thing exactly the same, every single time.

p.s. i come out of my forward bend to feel the weight of the club head and to check my balance, then i get right back into it. lots of different ways...

There is no perfect setup. There is an optimal setup for each player. Setup can help minimize a swing flaw.

Swing too flat, setup more bent over. Swing too steep, setup more upright. Have a hard time with a lateral shift? Go stack and tilt. Hard time with reverse pivot, setup with a feeling of more weight on the back foot. Etc.

Setup is just another component in matchups.

This is how to find perfect balance and the optimum forward bend for you. It's not the same setup for everyone, although it sets the centre of the pelvis over the ankles, which is something seen in every good swing.

If you need to tweak your setup because of a swing fault by all means mess around with your balance... Or you could fix the fault.

I like this idea! Gave it a shot in my backyard with some foam balls and found it prevented a set up with excess hip flexion! Nice!

For the record, doing just step 1.) was enough for me!

I think the best setup comes from having solid mechanics and having a full understanding of your swing. Realistically, you have to compensate for something depending on how your ball lies, the terrain and the shot you need to make. And, if you’re dependent on a ‘perfect’ setup routine a lot of that goes out the window once you’ve left the tee box. I think practicing with alignment sticks is important for developing a good setup because over time it forces you to really understand your swing. The key here being ‘over time’. Don’t expect good results the first few times out. In fact, once you start using the sticks things could get worse before they get better.

I'm sorry that you've misunderstood my post. This method of setting up is designed to find balance in every situation and especially on tricky lies.

It works.

The info from this video, starting about 1:00, helped me get in a more consistent setup routine. Much like with putting, I’ve found that using a routine frees my mind from a lot of negative thoughts by replacing them with positive intention.
