Reducing putter head weight

Recommended Posts

It can be done. You could hollow out the bumpers. You could have holes drilled on the bottom part on heel and toe. You could remove part of the flange. You could reduce some of the mass between the bumpers and the top line. 10g isn't hard to come by. Getting it done and how it will look are different stories.

Re-mill the face, drill some ports to reduce weight, cut a sound slot (will make the putter clicky), etc.

There are a few options but they are all permanent but they should be done by someone who knows what they are doing.

I own numerous Piretti Putters with head weights ranging from 350gr to 365gr.  I have " adjusted" all of them to feel the same at 34.5" playing length...total weight 555gr  balanced to E-2 on swingweight scale... to get a 375gr head to my numbers would require a much lighter shaft ( about 60gr ) and heavier grip ( about 120gr ) then what I did to my long slant neck 365 gram head Cottonwood 2...

Shaft: KBS C-Taper 120 5iron shaft, tipped 2" and when trimmed to its 30" install length about 95 grams

Grip: Gripmaster Roo midsize paddle 89 grams + grip tape, about 95gr.

Edit: adding 25 grams of counter weight to the grip end will make a big difference in feel of head , making a 375gr head feel like a 365gr head...static weight, which I find just as important would be heavier, but that  number can vary greatly from player to player.......

Heavy grip "90 gram +" will help or counterweight.  You can port the bottom or scallop but you will lose significant value of the putter if you do that.

you should try the counter weight grip before trying a weight reduction.  Saw something here the other day about P2 grips they have a variety of grips and weights and they look kinda neat, to my eye.

Drilling out the bumpers will affect the moi a small amount and as the others mention kinda reduce any value unless you send it back to Piretti and have them do it.

Go to a much lighter shaft, possible graphite. I've done this with heavier heads and it works well to lighten the feel. You may need a small amount of CW in the shaft, somewhere around the grip to get the total weight right.

I would recommend going to a lighter graphite shaft and counter balance with 20 to 30 grams of weight from golf works and or heavier grip. This will bring the swing weight down as well as keep the overall weight at a reasonable level. If you just counter balance the putter it will be very heavy.  This is exactly what Odyssey is doing with the stroke lab shafts.

Not sure what the hosel diameter is but if it’s 0.370 you can get a nice stiff Hybrid shaft for cheap.

I did this on my Bettinardi Queen B as it has a head weight of 362 grams and a prefer putters with a head weight between 345 and 350 grams. I am happy with the results.

Thanks for all the feedback...I am going to try a graphite shaft and counterbalance grip/weight.  Does it matter what flex shaft I get?  Do I need X stiff for a putter?

I used a stiff flex with a 362 gram head and it felt very smooth but also felt a little too soft. It forced me to use a smooth stroke. Replaced the stiff shaft with a stroke lab shaft. Stroke lab is much stiffer than the stiff flex shaft. Putter feels more solid with the stroke lab. Head and shaft feel like one piece working together.

With a 370 gram head an x flex shaft may be your best bet. It all really depends on the feel you are looking for and your putting stroke.

Hi,

Have you gone forward with a new shaft and counter weight? If so, how did it work out for you?

I ended up putting in a Diamana D+ Hybrid shaft in X flex (+/- 90g) with a Winn CB grip (+/- 130g)....and it is great!  Best solution that I could come up with for my skill level and price point for an experiment.  My next step would be to replace with a Stroke Lab shaft, but I'm happy for now.
