Maxfil Tour vs Taylormade Tour Response

Played 18 holes - 9 with the Maxfli Tour (not the 2021 version) and 9 with the Tour Response.  Here's a quick summary.  Note, I played the Maxfli Tour most of last year.

Driving - Edge to the Maxfli Tour.  The TR felt and looked like it was a rocket, but when you get to the ball you realized that it did not go nearly as far as it appeared.  I think it was because it seem to launch higher and gave the impression of going a long way.  The Maxfli seemed to have a more penetrating flight and carried further a good bit.

Long irons - Once again, the TR felt really good off the irons, but this was probably because of the softer compression, but it did not seem to carry as far as the MT by a 1/2 to a full club.

Short irons / Wedges - The MT definitely has more backspin and checks up nicely when you want it to.  The TR was not bad, just not as good.  Edge to MT.

Putter - Didn't really notice any difference and I'd call it a draw.

Durability - I'm playing the matte white version of the MT and it seems to need a cleaning after every hole, but the durability is very good.  I normally can get multiple rounds out of a single ball.  The TR's cover did not seem as durable.  I noticed some scuff marks on the ball that were from making contact with the clubs because I didn't hit any trees/cart path, etc.

Next up, I'll be comparing the Maxfli Tour to the 2021 Srixon Z Star.  I've played the Z Star in the past and really like it.

Nice review - thanks ! Tour response is on my radar for this year. And still is; despite YOUR findings.

I say that - as it would be nice to know a bit of background: your handicap, if you’re a high / low spin player, your normal ball flight, game tendencies etc etc

Cheers.

PING - G20 - 9.5  degree - Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue - X
BRIDGESTONE J33 (15) - Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue - X

PING  ZING2 Irons (4-PW) - Black Lie angle - JZ Stiff

I'm a 12 handicap and a senior player so my swing speed is relatively low.  I first considered TR because I thought I'd be able to compress it a little more and perhaps gain some speed.  Definitely not a high spin player, and my ball flight tends to be medium high.  Never had a problem launching the ball.

I was hoping to gain some yards off the driver and perhaps long iron, but didn't see that.  The ball also seem to float just a little which may have contributed to the shorter distance.

If you give it a try, please let me know of your results.  It is a pretty nice feeling ball but unless the ball is very firm I don't really notice the difference.

Cheers. I’m perhaps the polar opposite to some degree.

Typically pretty low launch, and high’ish spin. SS of around 105-108mph with a driver.

The claims of high launch, soft feel and some reviews of ‘half a club longer’ with the irons were the main draws for me.

No golf allowed until March 29th here in the U.K.....but I have a sleeve here to compare to my normal TP5 and TP5-X. I’ll let you know...

What a bummer not being able to play.  We've been able to play throughout the pandemic.  In fact, it seems like this pandemic has been a motivation for a lot of people to either play more golf or take up the sport.  Not much else you could do socially for most of last year except play golf.

I had some time at lunch and do some chipping with the new Titleist ProV1, new Srixon Z Star, and my gamer 2019 Maxfli Tour.  The ProV1 felt and reacted very well.  The Z Star had a very unusual feel to it, but played pretty well.  Didn't really notice a lot of difference between these and the Maxfli Tour other than the feel.  I think I'm going to stay with the Maxfli Tour, although I'm sure I could play either of these balls.

Whats the compression on the MT?

I played them once last year and didnt like them.  Then I figured, well I have a dozen left and started using them sporadically.  I just played Buffalo Ridge last week, used them on the back 9, not a single lost ball, every drive was straight, think I had all bogeys and pars.  Now maybe it was a product of being warmed up after the 1st 9 holes and it was my first round of the year but still...def getting another shot.

103.9 on MGS.  Obviously OEM’s measure it in different ways, so take that for what it’s worth.  MT is a great ball IMO.  Certainly not better than big brands, but hangs right with them shot for shot for significantly better pricing.  Best deal on a non-dtc ball on the market.

Couldn't agree more.  MT is a quality ball and comparing to a lot of other balls, I find it performs as well or better for me.

I'm playing the matte white ball and really like it because it seems easier to find.  Does pick up grass stains rather easily, but I normally clean my ball every time I reach the green anyway.  Just ordered some of the new MT direct from Dicks so I'm anxious to see if there is any difference.

If it's considered high compression, it doesn't feel like it to me.

104 compression? SHEESH

I'm only saying this because I was used to playing the Softflis and Wilson Duo Optix, this is completely opposite end of the spectrum.  I shot 79 with a Softfli last summer.

Guess compression doesnt matter lol...for me at least.  Or maybe just more time needed.

It’s a tour ball, but I think mgs measures the entire balls compression whereas some oem’s just measure core compression. Looking at compression numbers can be folly sometimes. The cover is cast urethane(as is prov1 and x) so there’s plenty of feel. Again, if you like playing the tour type balls and don’t like DTC, then this is the best bang for your buck on the market.

You need to take the compression rating comparatively so...the Bridgestone tour b rx rated 99.6....104 not so firm when comparing to the other models/#'s in that test!....page down to the Most wanted ball features chart for the compression ratings.

@jjfcpa Have you had a chance to compare the '21 Maxfli Tour to the previous model?

TaylorMade M5 / Callaway Mavrik 3W / Maltby KE4 FDI 19 / Callaway Mavrik Pro 3H / Maltby TS1 4-GW / Callaway MD2 56 / Odyssey Double Wide / Titleist Pro V1

No, I have not.  But I did play a round on a very windy day (gusts to 35 mph) and the previous MT played exceptionally well.  I just can't imagine the new one being better.  Might get a chance to try the new ones this weekend and I'll update this thread at that time.
