Driver head with adjustments for lowering trajectory

Recommended Posts

I'm 6'4 and I have a steep swing which produces a high driver under normal situations. I'm looking for a head that has adjustability (front and back) to help control trajectory (with the help of the right shaft of course). I'm a solid 6GHIN and a pretty consistent ball striker but the driver is my next area to improve. I currently play a 9 degree Titleist TSi2 which is fantastic however still higher than desired.

Any suggestions?

On top of that, not all heads are manufactured equally.  Just because the label (or the design) says 9* doesn't mean it really is 9*.   +/- 1.5* is not uncommon for most OEM's and models.

For a cheaper experiment than going new you could look for a 2016-17 M1 driver, you'll have the hosel adjustments as well as the two tracks in which you can drastically move the weights, plus you can completely change them out for different weights if you wanted. Shafts with TM adapters are pretty plentiful on the second hand market.

If I recall correctly, the best way to make a change in the launch angle and spin is by changing loft, whereas moving around weights is more about tweaking the launch conditions.  So I think your first move should be to go down in loft and/or find a driver head that is lower launching before worrying about movable weights.  Titleist lists the TSi2 as "high" launch while the TSi3 and TSi4 about listed as "mid."

If you like Titleist, switch to the TS3 or TSi3.  The CG of the "2" model (TS2, TSi2) is more low and rearward than the 3, hence it tends to launch higher, assuming the same combination of loft and shaft.

So in theory, moving to a TS3 in 9* should lower launch.  Then you can adjust the surefit hosel to lower it another 0.75*.  This should help with your launch.

The TSi 2, 3, and 4 all come in 8* loft and can then be adjusted down another 0.75* to play at 7.25*.  I think that is about as low as you can go in current drivers without getting a head made specifically for people doing long drive competitions.  The TM M5 comes in 9* adjustable down to 7* and has the two sliding weights.  But keep in mind that when you move both weights forward to bring down the launch and spin, you're also lowering the MOI, making it harder to control.

Not all head designs are created equal.  So while you do currently have a 9* head, it isn't a lower launching design with the CG pulled back.  Finding a TS3 in an 8.5* loft would surely bring it down, and then you can always open the face or a flatter setting unless that give you additional issues.

First thing to do is the use foot powder spray to check the face impact position.  Too high a launch can be a result of impact too high on the face.   if that's the case, the simple thing to do would be to tee the ball down lower.   I might suggest trying that anyways even if impact is good.   A high tee can potentially promote delivery of a high dynamic loft

To add to what Stewart said, the combination of steep, low on the face, and high trajectory means that you likely have the classic combination of over the top plus an open club face which equals high spin and high trajectory. Either that or you are trying to hit excessively up on the ball and catching it low. Cranking down driver loft will be the only direct equipment solution to either issue.

Yep.  Changing lofts by going lower for driver is the most dramatic way to lower launch.  Shaft can only do so much for that.  I play a 8 degree head now that puts me right at 11-12 degrees of launch.  It was 14-15 degrees with a previous SIM head.

I'm not convinced the trajectory is from a high launch angle - but rather from the high spin of the low face contact.   But not much more we can do other than guess if he's not willing to share the numbers.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
