Advice Needed - TM Warranty Claim started, now might want to cancel?

Recommended Posts

Thanks in advance for any help/advice. I'll try to keep it brief.

I purchased a TM P790 UDI 2i with a HZRDUS Smoke 100X shaft from a seller about a month and a half ago. When I got it, the weather here in Virginia Beach area was trash, so honestly it sat in the box opened, but untouched for a couple weeks. I was also moving during this time, so while I was excited to get the new club, it wasn't even really on my radar. Fast forward and I go to take the club out and potentially throw it in the bag for a round that week and I notice a slight imperfection in the face. It's not like a full-blown dent, but it's definitely a little something. After talking to the seller, who never noticed it (which would be easy to miss), and doing a little research, apparently these "dents" in the face are common on the hollow/foam-filled clubs like the p790 UDI, so we decided to file a claim with Taylormade.

He has a buddy that helped him purchase the club who has a Taylormade account, so he did the warranty claim for me. The club was custom. It was 2* up and 2* strong with the 100g HZRDUS Smoke shaft. When they sent me a screen shot of the warranty replacement order there were a couple issues that jumped out:

First, you'll see it says SIM UDI, not P790, which is what I want. The rest all looks pretty good, except the shaft shows HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX Hybrid. I can't find anything online that shows that they make the RDX Version of the Smoke in a 100 gram, which is what I really liked about the original.

My questions are:

1. Are they still making the P790 or is the SIM UDI the only option they would be shipping at this point?

2. Does anybody know if there is a 100g HZRDUS Smoke RDX Black hybrid shaft?

3. I don't really want the SIM UDI, but I'd be willing to accept it IF the shaft is still the 100g version. If it is not, and the warranty replacement order has been placed, do you think it's possible to cancel the replacement at this point?

While I'm not crazy about the idea of playing with a club that isn't perfectly intact as far as the face is concerned, it's also not so "dented" that it would necessarily impact play very much. I didn't intend for it to become a thing, I thought it would be an easy swap, but now it seems like anything but. I guess my hope would be to cancel the return/warranty, and play with the club I have as is until it either gets worse and i can manage the return myself with a local retailer, or hopefully it doesn't get worse and I can just play the club I purchased.

Thoughts? Will the "dent" really impact play? It's hard to see, but I tried to capture as best I could.

Let me add, the seller has offered a full refund if I'd prefer that. And I can certainly go that route, but I really like the club I bought, and don't really want to start back at square one if I don't have to.

According to the TaylorMade website you can still order the 790UDI, and it looks like the RDX they offer is the 90 class at 94 grams. I’m unsure if they’re low stock on the the 790 and stopped orders from outside their own website or phasing it out.

I think you relinquished control once you/they decided to pursue a warranty claim.  If I were you, I would just return the club, and perhaps just order a new one. I understand trying to save a few bucks, but with this much nuance, I think you might just need to bite the bullet and buy new to get the club you want.

Or if you want to just give this club a go to save some money, then put aside the dent for now, game it, and see how it performs.  Of course, at that point, the club is now yours and your problem.

With this warranty claim, based upon your description, the odds seem pretty slim of you getting the exact club you want, with the exact shaft/specs that you want.

My .02 cents.  YMMV.

Thanks for the reply. That’s what I think. There’s almost 0 chance the warranty replacement will be the one I want. I’m not opposed to trying to game it as is, recognizing that if there are issues at that point its on me. Pretty frustrating, but the seller is being cool so I’m not too worried, just trying to make a decision because that backorder date is a couple days away and if I can cancel it before they build it, I think I’d prefer to control my own destiny. 13grams between the Smoke 100X (106g) and the RDX 90x (93g) seems pretty significant…

This is exactly what I was going to say also. If I were you I'd just take the refund the seller offered and be done with it.

Any warranty claim is a pain in the you know what, but you're trying to be a part of one with not only yourself and TM but also the original seller and some "buddy" of his who has a TM account and was the original purchaser of the club. So basically the chain goes from TM, to the sellers buddy, to the seller, then finally to you....

That sounds like the worlds biggest headache and I doubt in the end you'll even end up with the exact club you want.

I would speak to taylormade directly and see what they say about the situation.  They usually stand behind their product bought new or second hand.  I know that they have stock that doesn’t show on the website as they are replacing my SIM MAX head even though it doesn’t show on the site.  They confirmed not a SIM2 either which doesn’t bother me.  If you speak to them and they confirm that they have no more 790 UDI and the SIM is the only model get a refund.  That’s just my opinion. Oh yeah and the weather here in Va Beach has been crap, thankfully this week is a blessing to us!

I have done warranty replacements through TM in the past and they usually have no problem send you a new replacement BUT it will be their latest product line because they want that in everyone's hands.

It is not because they want the latest product in everyone's hands, it is because they have run out of inventory for that particular model.

The seller is being super cool about it. So I would not really want to stick him with the warranty claim and a refund especially since wanted to offload the club.
Maybe TM will give an equivalent credit instead for something else.
Maybe take the sim replacement and flip it for another 790.
Also, I’ve seen Some golf shops exchange a club someone won in a tournament for something else.
Different loft, or a completely different club. Maybe you could find one that had a UDI in stock and try that.

Since his buddy has the TM account, follow up with them.  TM will rarely send you old stock, I tried with a driver, and even though it was in stock on the website they would only send me the latest and greatest.

With his buddy having a TM account he can probably shed some light if swapping out the existing shafts before sending back would be a problem.  I have the original TM UDI 2 iron, head only, that I could send you for peanuts if you go the swapping out of the shafts route and don't like the SIM.
