Fired on the 3rd hole!

Recommended Posts

Fired on the 3rd hole yesterday!  Never happened before, didn't see it coming.   He blamed me for a few bad shots, I offered some advice about his alignment looked off....he got upset that I shouldn't be giving him advice during the round  .....boom, asks mom to tap in.....who replied "no thanks, getting blamed for your bad shots doesn't sound like fun to me!"   I was thrilled she backed me up, rather than be mommy to the rescue.  He carried the bag the rest of the round (no pushcart), while we peacefully watched from the cart path.  He was livid, no doubt thought I would insist on continuing.      I mostly enjoy caddying.  We usually get along well and have some really great memories.....but days like yesterday I am looking forward to him aging up into more non-caddie tmnts.

My oldest's junior year at state golf.  Only coaches can talk to players and only between holes.  Coach was just checking in with her early on back nine and came over to me and asked if there was anything to pass on and I'm letting him know she's pretty much been aiming way right on all her irons so far and can't remember but something else, and she's just missed an easy birdie putt and probably not the time to say anything, but hey, he asked.  He goes over and talks to her and before she goes up to tee off catches me with her eye, big smile and a little wave.  Boom, giant drive, pars a tough hole and off to the races the rest of the round.  Taking her for ice cream later after dinner that evening I asked what her coach said on hole whatever - she said he told her that I said she was playing awesome and keep it up!  I told her that's not exactly what I said, and she smiled and told me she knew that already, haha.  Her coach was a great filter!

Never caddied, but never had a kid play in a "real" tournament at a young age.  I'd say if he didn't ask for help, be a caddie and don't offer playing advice, let him decide when he wants your input, otherwise it's "Man this is fun" or whatever cheers him up if he's struggling, or nothing.

BUT, you and he know your relationship better than anyone else.

Man I can relate. I try really really hard not to step over the line on coaching while she is playing. I see alignment stuff or weird choices around the green and really want to say something but usually bite my tongue, because my daughter does not respond well to it (especially if I am wrong).

Case in point we were playing last Saturday (her last day of being 12)  and she got through the front 9 at 5 over. We were 4 holes in on the back and she was 1 under par. Mind you she has never broke 80 and really wanted to do it before she turned 13. She was hitting irons beautifully. Had 90 yards into a short par 4, up the hill, into the wind. She pulled Gap wedge which should go about that distance, but I stupidly told her that I thought it was playing longer with the wind.

Well the wind shifted really fast for a moment (there were thunderstorms) and she hit her A wedge over the green, short sided with a bad lie and got double. I felt awful, she was KING SiZE pissed. Luckily she birdied the next hole and then scraped her way into a 79 when her par putt on 18 lipped out for 78. It is a learning experience for all of us.

We had a huge melt down with our daughter when she was 10.  After that and based on advice from her coach every decision is her decision (so she can't blame me after). And that was not a reward.  Just the way it is. I no longer take the blame for anything.

I feel like one of the reasons a lot of people gravitate towards golf is that it's a solo sport. If you lose or don't play well there is no one to blame but yourself. You can't claim that your teammate missed that layup or that he/she didn't catch that foul ball.

Although I'm sure you'll miss the memories, it's probably a good thing he "kicked you off his bag" now. He'll be able to start realizing that he'll need to adapt during a round and self-motivate. Both are good lessons to learn early on.

To be honest that would be the last time I carry for him.  It will happen again maybe in situation that you lose control or Mom does step in.

I would perhaps sit down with him now and say its lets get you a pushcart.
