I have a few I miss most notably the original pro v1.  That was a fun time in the game. The Titleist 975D, 975J and  983K drivers and "seaming"  the Pro v1 ball. After El's win in Hawaii with massive distances off the tee using the driver ball combo and then the reveal of seaming the pro v it was like a Titleist conspiracy theory across the game.  The Callaway Rule 35 was a cool ball and I enjoyed the Taylormade Lethal as well.

The one that stuck with me the most was titliest tour prestige. I was furious when it was replaced by the professional. That ball had more durability than the balata but more spin and better feel than the professional.

I really liked the 2007 era of Pro V1 ball because of the amount of spin they offered, yes the covers did cut up super fast but getting several feet of back spin with the irons every time was a joy to see.

 

Also special mention for the Maxfli Revolution ball that I used as a junior.

Remember the Taylor Made "Inergel" balls? Each sleeve was a plastic tube with a snap-on lid. I thought they were super classy!

 

I bought a dozen for a round at a tough local club that was hard to get on. 

 

On the first tee I ceremoniously cracked open my first Tupperware sleeve. Hooked the first one into deep ball-eating grass on the left. Repeated that swing almost exactly and lost a second ball.

 

Two balls lost off the very first tee. 

 

Still. Classy.

Wilson Staff FG Tour X is my all time favorite and I'm glad that I would hoard them each year as Wilson stopped making them and I still have some 30 dozen.  My honorable mentions the Callaway HX Tour 56 and the Nike One Tour D...oh the memories!!

YES! They were certainly ahead of their time. Seemed like it would just stay in the air forever and gently fall out of the sky. I find the newer TP5/x to be somewhat similar. The Penta TP5 as honorable mention too.

First Urethane ball I played was a maxfli m3 tour....had a red and black.  Others that I really liked...Maxfli Rev Tour, Maxfli Black Max, Precent UtriTour, and Nike TA2 Spn and Long (precept utri extra spin and distance).  So many good balls.

In my opinion the RZN Tour Black is the best ball I've ever hit. I stocked up after Nike's closure announcement but after 5 years the supply is almost gone. I still have 2 dozen of the One Tour D and occasionally take a sleeve out for a spin.

Maxfli HT100 urathane wound ball I never got along the the Titliest Professional for some reason but this Maxfli ball I  loved. I could make that ball do anything I wanted.

2021 Pro V1

 

I have never had any experience with golf balls where a discontinued ball performed better in some way than balls which came after it. Yes, it's a mature product category so there are no monumental differences from one generation to the next. But the Tour balls in 2013 were better than those in 2003 and the ones in 2023 will be better than the 2013 ones. Tiny differences but always in the direction of improvement and after 10 or 20 years it adds up.

 

I can't speak to anyone else's experience but the belief that certain balls from 10 or 20 years ago were absolutely perfect and that every ball after that has been a step backward strikes me as more likely nostalgia than objective fact.

Since balls can perform differently when struck by the same type of club (but different manufacturer), or when struck by all the different unique human swing deliveries, it seems logical not all future changes will benefit everyone. There have been threads on this board about pro's preferring older models of Titleist, and insist on playing those models.... are they being nostalgic? Of course in fairness to your point they are not 10 to 20 yr old models.

 

Anyway, small tweaks in a 2017 model may assist a hypothetical Group A of golfers but not help Group B, and the 2019 version may make the ball more appealing to Group C but not so much the other two.  2021 model may be even more different. Lots of variables, lots of ways to make a great ball...even more varieties of golfer.

Tourstage X01 Blue from around 2010 timeframe.  Have a relative that is a retired former engineer for Tourstage/Bridgestone in Japan that learned I loved these and found me a few dozen from his contacts.  I just about cried when I lost the last one.
