Epic Speed Triple Diamond

It's a mix of the Speed and Max LS - but at the same time is neither.

It has the shape of the Speed and some of the forgiveness/face shape of the Max LS - but does not contain the new jailbreak nor a moving weight track. it has the older 'two weight' front/back method of weighting and also the two regular jailbreak bars from the last few models.

wait, the epic speed triple diamond doesn't have the new AI Speed Frame? That's gotta be a joke, they have a bunch of pictures of their tour staff holding the speed frame and they aren't even using it?

To get the weight more forward and add the plug in front there isn’t room. There are going to be 3 different triple Ds released..in May. Along with forged raw wedges for $200 and the TCB irons.

that's wild. I get that there isn't room because of the plug in front, but why mislead the masses into believing that the pros are using the ai speed frame like they did?

more importantly, can you elaborate on what exactly the 3 triple diamond models are going to be? characteristics, forgiveness, spin, and whatnot.

Funny, the info shared with me is the opposite; the Speed Frame is present. It’s listed on the sole too.

Well. AI is in relation to the face. So no lie there. Speed frame is something differently and I think many pros are using the retail model head. I think almost half.

Good info. I have not seen any triples in person.

Maybe it is just different. For the record.. the additional screw or plugs on the retail model are there for just looks. There is nothing attached there..

I’m told the speed frame is positioned between the front weight port and face so there is no interference.

Hmmm, so it's possible.

We know the two small dots between the larger 'old' jailbreak dots are just cosmetic. Maybe callaway just doubled down on that fact and removed them all together but still having the new frame.

I wonder why so many pros play the triple diamond models? I love my standard Mav SZ. I had thought of trying the Max LS if it's more forgiving but I don't imagine it will be worth the change.

Forgiveness and more spin. tbh most pros dont need 1800-2200 spin...the sub zero models were 'launch monitor heroes'. Hence why callaway release a more playable head and stopped making the SZ.

The Trip Diamond heads have been so popular because they give the players using them the neutral/fade bias they need without the knuckleball that they don't. There's also differences in their shaping that tend to make them appealing, but that's not really what we're talking about here.

"Silly low" spin isn't wanted by high level players (and SHOULDN'T be wanted by players of any level that want a driver that's going to allow them to score their best) for a multitude of reasons.

1. Top level players' strike patterns are tight enough and they swing fast enough that they don't need spin rates around 2000 and below to hit the ball far enough. Their strikes rarely stray very far from the more optimal regions of the driver face, and they all bring their own gas in the club head speed department. The added distance from knuckleball-ish spin simply isn't needed.

2. Keeping spin in a more manageable window makes for a much more predictable and playable trajectory. Player X can aim up the left third of the fairway and let his fade rip knowing it's not going to fall excessively to the right. If you take 4-500 RPM of backspin away from that player, now all of a sudden that reliable little fade starts to move more than they want. They start having to make compensations to accommodate the club, and that's bad practice for a player of any level never mind the best in the world. There are of course rare exceptions to this, Colin Morikawa being the one that comes to mind first. While above Tour average, his club head speed is rather modest when compared to many of the current best of the best. His AoA with driver is +5, his spin rate dwells just above 2000, but he can function that way because the consistency of his delivery and strike quality is freakishly good even compared to his freakishly good peers.

3. At the speeds top level players swing it and the distances they drive it, they're looking for all the help they can find to ideally keep their ball in the fairway but at the very least keep the ball in play. Keeping spin on the golf ball helps them do that, but that's not what drivers designed to win the "TrackMan Olympics" provide them.

4. "Silly Low" driver spin is a barrel of laughs when you're on the range with TrackMan trying to see what sort of ludicrous spin rates and distances you can produce, but it rapidly loses its comedic value when your money game is on the line and you need to get a drive in play. Given the choice between a knuckleballing bomb into the gunch or a shorter and higher spinning drive that's likely to give me a greater chance to shoot a score, I know which one I'm choosing. Nobody cares how far you bombed it when you're next shot is classified as a recovery...and you're forking over money at the 19th hole while you're playing buddies are giving you the needle about your driving.

As an aside, remember TaylorMade's "Everybody Launch it at 17* and 1700 RPM to hit it 17 more yards tO sCoRe SeVeNtEeN sTrOkEs LoWeR" PR campaign? I've only ever seen one player who can produce those launch conditions, and he's a regular playing partner of mine. He's in his early 60's, has never taken a lesson but still manages to play around scratch with a most unorthodox but effective home-grown swing. You can't understand how comical the 17* 1700 drive looks until you see my guy hit one in real life. Your first thought will likely be "that's absurd, I could never play my best golf hitting drives that look like that," and you'd be exactly right.

This is spot on. Well Played sir.

Interesting that the retail LS spins less than the TD.

"LS Spins less than 💎💎💎. If I had to put a number on it (for me) its about 200-300 RPM."

The Mavrik TD is a winner for me.  Interesting that the Epic Speed TD LS is the closest to the Mavirk TD.

Thanks for the link!

    • APPLY NOW: L.A.B. Golf MEZZ.1 Putter (Early Access) Member Testing! 10 Testers Needed!
L.A.B. Golf is choosing ten GolfWRX members to receive their MEZZ.1 putter early and put their brand new product to the test before reporting back to the community about what they see. The selected testers will be one of the first to experience the MEZZ.1 from L.A.B. GOLF, their newest Lie Angle Balanced design, ahead of it's January 2022 launch!

About The L.A.B. Golf Mezz.1 Putter
MEZZ.1 is our new mid-mallet putter that’s fully CNC machined from a billet of 6061 aircraft aluminum (body) and 303 stainless steel (midsection) to create our best-feeling — and we think best looking — putter to date. It includes 10 weights (eight on the bottom, two on the sides) that allow us to individually build each putter to a golfer’s exact specifications.

      How To Apply
In a post below, answer the following questions.

      1. City, State?
      2. Handicap?
      3. What is your current putter?
      4. Have you ever used a L.A.B. Golf putter?
      5. Why do you want to review the MEAZZ.1 putter?
      6. Do you agree to participate in an ongoing testing thread, posting reviews and photos?

That's it! @labgolf and GolfWRX will choose the testers in about 2 weeks! This testing event is for good-standing members in the USA only!
