Man...I have brand new ZX7 heads, but waiting on backordered shafts before they can be built up. Following these MP threads and watching/reading every review of the 223 is going to make me do something drastic. My head is spinning.

And as I was typing this out I received word from a local fitter that heads are in. Time to get my butt in there.

Mr Krab Iron Dilemma.jpg

I was in the same boat (still am, I suppose) but decided to pull the trigger on the 225s for the added forgiveness. But if they don't wow me in February, the ZX7s are next in line.

Had a fitting this morning. Won’t dive into it too much, but it was a pretty underwhelming fitting experience. No shaft optimizer. Also don’t think they had x-stiffs in the cart. Covered outdoor range, hitting off a mat with Trackman. Balls were some kind of Titleist range/practice ball - spin rates were all over the place and seemed unreliable. All that said, to be fair I was really just interested in hitting the new MP line for fun.

But anyway, came away very impressed with all the irons. No big surprises for me, other than some eye popping carry numbers, and results were mostly as expected.

225 – Had a brief go, but descent angle was pretty low with the one shaft I tried it with. They’re hot. Little on the firm side in comparison to the other two, which is to be expected. Head was a bit big for my liking.

223 – the talk about these being a smaller package had me thinking they wouldn’t be for me, but after seeing and hitting them, those concerns are gone. Powerful, but soft. Forgiveness for me was very impressive especially out on the toe. There were a couple where I was like whoops toed that one, but looked up to see the ball flying straight and carrying majority of my expected distance.

221 – my first experience ever with a blade. I pured three straight shots and decided I should stop there. Distance was right up there with the 223s. I’ve been pondering comboing after seeing my dispersion...but honestly I don’t think I have any business going down that route.

I’ll be ordering 223’s 5-PW. May possibly bend 5-7 weak. Shaft tbd.

Lastly, as someone who was looking for a ZX7 vs 223 comparison, the 223’s are the winner for me. I was all in on ZX7’s after testing a 7i the past couple months. The Mizuno’s felt and looked better to me, but only slightly. Comparison pics below.

Thanks for the review. Is 223 top line thicker or just camera angle? I have zx7s

They’re extremely close and I couldn’t tell you with certainty that one is thicker than the other. To my eye, the 223 maybe looked smaller, which could be due to it being more rounded vs the ZX7 square top line.

Saw the MP heads at Second Swing in Columbia, MD. They’re all beautiful. Much cleaner look than most competitors. My choice would be 223 or 225, though the 221 sure looks beautiful. They’re all low bounce, so for golfers who like higher bounce (like Srixon, Ping) the MP line might not be the choice.

I seem to do better with less bounce and they look great so eager to try. Here are a few photos showing the 225 (yellow paint fill) vs. the 921 HM Pro. The HMP two-tone look does make the top line and sole look thinner than they are.

Don’t know if the camera angles make it clear but in hand the MP 225 looks slightly thinner in the sole and a little shorter heel to toe. I really like the shape, which is a little more squat than long.

Did you hit the HMP and 225 side by side? Curious if the numbers, forgiveness, and feel are drastically different or similar. I’m currently gaming HMP but looking at something a little bit smaller and better feeling (not to say HMP feels bad) without sacrificing distance and forgiveness.

I did not yet, but I will. I also have a set of HMPs and I think they feel fine and are definitely long. Impressive game improvement features but they are not as svelte, more of a midsized head. I’m going back in to hit the 223 and 225 after the new year.

I finally bit the bullet and went for a fitting yesterday. Im 32 years old and I only get to play on the weekends now. A decade and a half ago, I was a scratch golfer and wouldve opted for a straight blade set, but not anymore. I have been playing a set of Callaway Apex Pros (2016 model) 4-pw with KBS tour stiffs for the last couple of years. I wanted to get fitted in hopes of being more consistent with my misses.

I started out hitting the 223. The mizuno shaft optimizer showed that my top three shaft options were 130 extra stiffs. I've never played extra stiffs, apparently because I've never been professionally fitted. I moved into the 225 and was seeing my ball speed around 130-132 with a 7 iron and 90 mph swing speed. My carry numbers were in the 190's but my spin and launch were low. Typically, my 7 iron carry distance is around 170 with my Apex Pros. The fitter wanted to see what a more lofted 7 iron would do, so I started hitting the 221s. Instantly, my launch and spin fell into the correct window. I tried several different shafts but I ended up liking the Dynamic Gold 120 X100's the best. My SS isnt extremely fast, but my transition is.

I tested the 2021 Apex Pros, T100, and T200 as well. The Apex Pros and the T200s sounded clicky to me. The T100 didnt have the feel or consistency that the 223s did (IMO).

I ended up ordering the 225 4-5 irons and 6-pw in 223. I ordered the DG X100 hard stepped once due to adding a 1/2 inch. Due to my lower flight, my set is being ordered at 221 loft specs.

When I was in high school, I worked in a golf store. I self-fit myself to a half inch long and 2 degrees upright. Interestingly, thats what the optimizer showed me for my specs.

All in all, I was surprised by a few things. First, I didnt think I would fit into an extra stiff. That has me questioning the shafts in my other clubs. Second, I didnt realize how much technology and lower loft in a 7 iron would add 30 yards.  Third, Im amazed that my stock setup from 17 years old is still the same now.

Maybe my experience will help someone else. Thanks!

I hit a full set of 223 a few weeks ago , 8 / pw was ok just ok nothing special 7/4 iron was not good very Clicky  that’s just my opinion , yes I do play Srixon zx7 and the 223s don’t even come close on feel , depression , Distance control, length . And again that’s my opinion.👍

I dont know that I would want my clubs to cause depression. Winter already does enough of that for me. 😄

Heck some, myself included, buy without even hitting them. Kinda is what it is.

Most locations you just don't have a choice, especially if you want to hit multiple clubs against each other.  Ill go and hit them just for feel alone, then try to find a demo day or a club that has grass hitting.

turf interaction as important as it is, is difficult to accommodate in most fittings.

Ive resigned myself to knowing ill buy clubs and won't know if they are good for me till I play several rounds with them. Which is why I only change clubs every 5+ years.

A lot of people have hit some of my sets before I bought them.

oh.  wait.  new clubs... I'll probably order them without a proper fitting / hitting session as well. Just the way life works.

Got to hit the Mizuno Pro 223 on a Trackman today for about 30 or 40 swings. I’m not sure if it’s the tech, or the 2 degrees stronger loft, or what, but I was hitting the 7 iron a good 12 yards further than I hit my current JPX 921 Tour on the same Trackman today.

I was swinging it about 84 mph and getting carry yardages in the low 180s.

Heel and toe misses were not penalized very much. They were going in the mid-170s. Slightly thin misses were doing similarly well. I hit one terribly — way in the heel, like flirting with a shank, and low — and was shocked when I looked up and saw it went 168. The forgiveness on these is no joke. Spin was lower than my JPX 921 Tours by maybe 800-1000 RPMs, but I was getting a descent angle of 46-48ish, so I’m not too worried about holding greens.

Feel-wise, it’s a little different than a fully forged one-piece iron, but it still felt really good.

The top line is a *little* thicker than the 921 Tours, and the blade length maybe a touch longer. But not much. And once you start hitting them and get used to them you kind of forget about that anyway.

All in all, I’m really happy I already have an order in for them. I knew I’d like these because I know my Mizuno specs and they addressed my exact issue with my JPX 921 SEL set (that’s the lefty 4/5 Forged, 6-GW Tour set): a little more forgiveness in the 6 and 7 irons in a similarly attractive package.

I do wonder how gapping will be from the techy 7 iron to the no-tech 8 iron. We’ll see!

I'll add my experience, I hit the 221 today. I mean they feel good. But they do launch the ball lower than the mp20s and after accounting for loft, they launch lower than my mp14s. They're small but not crazy small and on par  forgiveness wise as many mp blades. If I had to choose between a new set of mp14s and the 221, I don't think I'd go with the 221s. Now maybe in the long irons the 221 really shine over other mp lines but not in a 7 iron.  Now here's a shocker, I randomly was given a srixon zx7 to hit. Now I don't play any sorta clunky irons or cavity backs, always been an mb guy, I about handed it back after looking at it but I  hit it a handful of times, not a bad club, feel was good, so was launch/spin. The zx7 felt better than the z forged too. Just thought I'd share and found it interesting.

Mizuno is closed until next week so my order won't get in until then. I'm reading about a lot of backorders on shafts, though. Does anyone know if the Modus 120X is or has been one of the tougher shafts to get?
